I think giving Ang Paos to tutors may send the wrong signal to tutor and may make for an uncomfortable situation. Giving of gifts for special occasions such as Teacher’s Day or CNY is better and actually should be encouraged as it also shows to DC that the tutor should be appreciated in small ways and not just taken for granted. So by all means give a gift, I think that is a very nice gesture.

Payment by lesson is easier when u first start as u are not sure if the tutor is right for your child or if you wish to stop tuition immediately for whatever reason. Also if tutor or child is ill or not free then no lesson and therefore no payment. There will not be the issue of "make-up" classes.Once you and child are comfortable with tutor then work out the form of payment that best works for u. As long as there is a record which is accurate and contemporaneous with the lesson then such a record should be sufficient in the event of a dispute. Getting the tutor to sign off is the best of course but not so crucial as to make your record useless if not signed off.

SaltySalt:But if there is proof and evidence through emails then there might be a possibility to get back the fees from the parent. but why would the tutor suddenly quit? Honestly sometimes, some parents can be quite demanding too. No offense, just my point of view. There's nothing wrong with the parents and students, the tutor was just filling her empty slot during the holidays. Most of the students will take a break after the exmas.

I was contacted by Vincent to teach a group of children after he saw my post offering to give private tuition here:http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=48283His group of 4 children for me consists of 2 P4, 1 P5 and 1 P6, which is quite strange because P6 should be taught privately or be grouped with other P6 children. P6 is a very different ball game from other levels!Plus when I ask what company he owns, he says his company has no name. And I googled out that his home studio/tuition center is called DnA Learning Hub. So he basically lied to me.Sounds very, very dodgy. Any parents heard of this center or Vincent? He conducts lessons at his home studio/tuition center at Pasir Ris.

Agree with fruitypie. My kids’ tuition centre do not ask them to do very difficult sums when they know my kids have problem with difficult sums alrdy, instead the teacher in charge assess them based on their most recent school results and then get to know them after the first lesson to see if they can grasp information fast or are slightly slower and need more explanation. They explained to me before that in this way, its a more accurate method to assess the kids then to use papers when the kid is already having problem with the particular subject that they want to have tuition for.

Dear parents,How to know if our children need extra lessons? Should we send them to expose them to more? To widen their knowledge? Or should we send them only when they are failing? What do you look out for when choosing an enrichment/tuition centre? how do we determine if a centre is good? Any advice or comments from parents here? I am considering/looking for Chinese and Science classes for my son. Any recommendation would be appreciated.
