teachingparent:It is really important to keep a postive attitude in the first place to believe that all children can learn but some learn slower. ...Can even end up in foundation class when the gap gets wider as the years go on. Close the gap as early as Primary 1 or even better before is important. There is nothing wrong with a child, special needs or otherwise, being in foundation class if that is the appropriate level for the child's academic and motivational levels.I like the gist of what you have written. However, I would stress to parents to obtain proper diagnosis of special needs by qualified professionals. I know of tutors who offer help to special needs children after having only attended rather limited courses in the field.

Pen88n:crystaluv:80 plus for lower primary not good enough. because results will keep dropping all the way till pri6. it is very hard to maintain.I know of kids scoring 90+, but keep dropping all the way to P6. I also know of kids scoring 80+, but maintaining or improving over time to P6. So, what is impt in lower primary is not the marks. I hope parents can stop pressurizing kids must score 90+ for lower primary, but rather look and build foundation for the kids in lower primary. When the foundation is strong, the marks will come.kiasu parents will be kiasu parents. Die die must get 90+ before they are happy with the kid's grades. However, if these parents put in the effort to teach their own kids, then I guess they are entitled to that thinking. Getting 90+ will be a testament to the effectiveness of their teaching methods and how well they understand their child's weaknesses.

    jtoh:millan:
Hi millan,For math, try identifying the topics your son is weaker in and work on those. If he was doing alright in P4 and P5, it's probably a couple of specific topics that's stumping him. Just work on those and he should be alright.I think he said algebra. the fact that he is doing GEP, they cover higher standard of maths, I also dun know how to do... :frustrated: In the end he has to check w friends or copy the corrections. Teachers commented as all his GEP friends know how to do but he dun, he has the pressure to copy the answers instead of understanding it...If you can't teach him yourself, then send him to a tutor or someone who can. Better to bring him up to speed during the hols.
Yes, do get help if you can't do it yourself. He probably learns nothing if he just copies. He needs someone to help1. know why he thought wrong (this part is very important)2. understand why teacher's solution is right3. any other possible way to solve (to see relations in concepts)I think one to one tuition is better for this.Good Luck to you finding a good tutor.

I know of someone who will be opening a class for P5 HCL on Fri or Sat afternoons, limited to a class size of max 4 students. She stays in Bt Panjang and teaches in a good school.

    bigmomma123:wonderm:
sorry, is that a tuition center or an enrichment center?? :?I call it enrichment centre. I suppose you can also call it tuition centre. I don't think there is a commonly agreed distinction.i think enrichment center e.g. chinese enrichment centers don't focus on school syllabus.. just teach things e.g. story telling and hv funin context of math enrichment centers, some are like that too.. don't focus on moe syllabus.. aim to increase social skills/confidence.thats not smthing tuition centers focus on
To me, enrichment centres offer something which is beyond what the kids already learnt in class. It is either in terms breath or depth. But I think most centres still stay aligned to exam requirements when the kids are in upper primary. Of course, if the course names are totally different from school subjects, we know it will not be as related to school syllabus. In any case, I think you don't need to worry about the terminology. Just look at the course content offered and decide if it is suitable for your child?
