\"we guide, we fuss, we nag, we get ourselves upset and upset them...\" this is so true! I found myself with another child to worry about since I got my helper..I don't think is right to take an office employment as the absolute guideline for employment of domestic helper.
As an employer of both groups, I am definitely using different yardstick.
Simply put--
I do not have staff that think that they can knock at my door anytime for salary advancement. If they are in need of money, that's not a problem of mine.
I do not get my gate crashed for they personal loan or loan shark. For that matter, they can't use my home address as theirs, they do not have a chance to disrupt my life.
I would not be held responsible when my staff got herself pregnant from her EMA.
I do not have to answer to any authority if she thinks she can manage another job after office hours, unless the part time job is conflict of interest that might compromised my business.
I do not also, at anytime, put my young children under their charge.
I do not eat what my staff cooked, even she hates me, I will have no worry that my food be spiked.
I do not let them in charge of the security of my house, my belonging.
I do not house them, I do not subject to their emotional blackmail, I do not have to worry that they failed bi-yearly medical check up... even they are HIV positive we can still retain their service because we do not need to have close personal contact to interact.
I do not have the obligation to fly her home should she resigned.
In short, I do not have that much of the obligation for the average office staff.

Employer of a maid, is more to that... we are, their guardians... we have to ensure their safety and their well being, among other things...
Domestic helpers aren't our office staff. Period. Don't get yourself confused.
We cannot rely solely on them to auto assume their obligatory role to their employers, so, we exercise whatever influences we have on them, we guide, we fuss, we nag, we get ourselves upset and upset them...
For every right one wished to claim, there is also an obligatory duty to trade off, I am well aware of that... but if my maid is not aware of that, it's my duty to make her sees that, right?

I hope people can be more objective when they weight such issues.

On top of that, need to balance out pacifying them or enforced strict discipline…

Very true, I find myself worrying about her, she is not mature and I realize that I need to spend a lot of time at home supervising. Sometimes, feel like I am chained at home because of that. So ironical.

Maids come here for different reasons. However, the most important reason is to get a better salary. It is necessary to nip the bud when it is early. Hence, it is utmost to inculcate the idea that they are here for a higher pay so that their families can have a better life at home for this, they are many who would save and scrimp to reach their aim.

I thought of getting a maid as well. It seems that there are alot of things to considered after reading the posts.

I’m thinking fresh Indo maid would be less inclined to have these FB type of problems.
Is it ex-sin Indo, Ph maids or all ex maids from Middle east, Malaysia as well ? They seem to need to have the whole world know what they are doing, need to feel like they are celebrity with followers??? Really… is there so much to talk about on the phone, to post on FB??? -

Not true that fresh ones are less inclined with such issues. Even if they are from kampong, very conservative type, things will change, is just a matter of when. They get influenced by neighbor maids as easy even if they do not go out.I'm thinking fresh Indo maid would be less inclined to have these FB type of problems.

Once they start to interact, things change. It can be anywhere. (talking at the kitchen to someone staying one level up or one level down), throw rubbish, fetch kids from school, go down buy things etc.
My 1st Indo maid bought a 2nd hand phone from an old bird upstair shortly after one yr with me and she didn't have off day for 2 yrs at that time. When she got her phone, everything changed. And they usually buy behind our back. Even contract says no phone, it still happens. -
get new maid. dont ever get ex - singapore, ex taiwan, ex - whatever country maid… the have lots of demand … they think their employers are fools… they think we cannot survive without them. … there are so many maids wanting to come out to work, there is no lack of new maids at all. just walk into any agency (lots of them)and you see thick thick file of new maids waiting to find employer…

Some are inclined to use facebook as they are IT savvy. Like those from myanmar, whose IT knowledge is not as advanced.
