The sch has contacted me regarding them helping us to coordinate transport for enrichment. This was after feedback given to FT after attended the talk.


Bus company charging $4/trip.
Currently my child on sch bus

Any parents share difficulties when teaching hanyu pinyin spelling?
He’s now not attending any enrichment in this, considering whether should enroll him outside sch

Just to share here. I was shocked yesterday when I received my DD math assessment report from school..

The number comparison skill was barely at the start stage after assessment. It did surprised me as DD doesn't seems to have problem for math all these while and she did abacus lesson and pass the test as well. After reviewing with her, it was found that she doesn't understand the word 'total' means? And she doesn't understand what is meant by \"how many left?\". She claimed that teacher asked her to read more with parents, which sheis alalready avid reader.

Being a vivid reader in English storybooks does not equate to tackling Maths well.

\"How much more \", \"how many more \", how much less\", \"total\", \"altogether\", are common phrases encountered, in p1 Maths.
Some Montessori kindergarten would have exposed k2
Students to such terminology.

\"How much more \": children tend to make mistake.
When they see the word \"more\", they jump on it, always think of adding.
In their mind, they thought \"more\" - so, I better add.
Actually, \"how many more\" can be tricky, bec this can be a subtraction qn.

Example (p1 qn)
Jane has 8 apples.
John has 5 oranges.
Qn :
How many more fruits does Jane have ?

Answer : Jane has 3 more fruits than John.
(Because 8 - 5 = 3)
But some kids when they see the word \"more\", they jump on the word \"more\" & start to add quickly : 8 + 5 = 13, without quite understanding the question.
Because in their mind, they may not have read carefully, the entire phase \"how many more \" ? Is comparing 2 numbers : 8 and 5

Perhaps you may approach your school Maths hod to show you a list of keywords used in p1 / p2 Maths.
Maths hod in primary school(s) should have them.

With the list, go through with your child what each term means.
Practise some qns, using these keyword, to help re-inforce concepts understanding.

Just to share my experience, being an avid reader and attending abacus class doesn't mean that the kid will score in Mathematics, practice and understanding the maths formulas is important. My suggestion is to get those maths assessment books and expose her to different type of questions, read and explain to her the questions and work on it. We can't depend on the school to teach our kids everything as the teacher has to take care of 30 odd students at the same time, as parents we need to be actively involved too. I had a shock too when I saw my son's maths test result when he was in P1 so just relax, go into the fundamental and work on it.

The lesson that I learnt from all this is, don't leave things to school and kid, by assuming she knows what she do in her homework. Daily practice and exercise still essential to make sure she did understand the whole concept. It will get her more prepared for next learning steps.

Alternative, can log in to mconline. There are activities and tutorials that the kids can revise and pratice… I found it very useful.

Thanks all for the suggestion. Will practice more with assessment book and mconline. I think I will try to incorporate the math idea in daily conversation with her too. With real life activities, maybe it will help her to understand the qns better.

Last year, the open house was on Jul 23rd. They will inform once decide. Must be around that time, this year too I guess.
