wondering if the approach of solving the problem using the end (after the sales ) and comparing the ratio in the manner which ends up an illogical ans of 4u=3 is ok.

That's how I got to 91.5 cake and 45.75 puffs.

Hi, just learn that the q on the cake and cream puff is flawed. The q should read as 'The no of cakes was twice the no of cream puffs. After 180 cakes and 42 cream puffs were sold, the ratio of the no of cakes left to the no of cream puffs was 2:5. How many cakes and cream puffs were in the shop at first?


the answer is 306.

A & B share some beads. If A gives B 1/3 of his share, B would have 70 beads more than A. If A gives B 1/5 of his share, B would ahve 10 beads more than A. How many beads do A have at first?

At last
A : 15units – 5 unit = 10 units
B : 10 units + 70

At first
A : 15 units
B : 10 units + 70 – 5 unit = 5 units + 70

If A gives B 1/5 of his share
At last
A = 15units – 3 units = 12 units
B = 12 units + 10

At first
A : 15 units = 225
B = 12 units + 10 – 3 units = 9 units + 10

The no. of beads that A or B had at first must be the same for both the conditions.

5 units + 70 = 9 units + 10
4 units = 60
1 unit = 15

No. of beads that A had at first = 15 x 15 = 225

Thanks for your answer. When A gives 1/5 of this share to B which is equivalent to 3 units, why B has got 9 units+10? Shouldn't B gets 3 units+10?

When A gives B 1/5 of his share which is 3 units , B will have 12 units + 10 (because A will have 12 units at last & B will have 10 more beads than – mentioned in Qns)

If at last B had 12 unit + 10. So before receiving 3 units from A, B would have had 12 units + 10 – 3 units = 9 units + 10.

Green : 96

At last
Red : 108 – 1 unit = 9 parts
Green : 96 – 1 unit = 5 parts

96 – 5 parts = 108 – 9 parts
4 parts = 12
1 part = 3

1 unit = 108 – (9 x 3) = 81

No. of apples sold = 2 units = 81 x 2 = 162
