      maybe u can try replacing the word 'is' with the '=' sign. But your child must always remember when it comes to subtracting, always big number minus small number.

      1. 5 is 1 less than _
      5 = _ - 1
      2. _ is 1 less than 3
      _ = 3 - 1

      1 less than 7 is _____
      7 - 1 = _

      8 is ___ more than 3.
      8 = _ + 3

      Hope my 'another' way helps u.

        Hey! That’s how I teach my gal too! I told her 'is" and "=" is the same here. She seems to get it.

          Thank you.

          but if the case is
          6 is ____ less than 7.
          the sentence is :
          6= 7- ____
          i doubt whether she’ll be able to understand changing signs.
          I am sure that your method works.
          but how to explain this to my dd.
          please give me some suggestion.

            There were 51 passengers in a bus. Some passengers alighted at the first bus stop. How many passengers alighted at the first bus stop if 39 passengers were left in the bus ?

            51-39=12 😄

            Actually this was my question originally posted on 5 Dec 2008 :
            Are the teachers trying to test the students' English or Maths ?

            The key to doing well in Maths, is actually not to be able to add or subtract like a calculator. It is more important to be very good in English in order to understand the question.

            The worst case is if the Maths teacher cannot write in good English 😛

              P2Q: Alice has 380 red and yellow marbles.

              110 marbles are yellow.
              how many more red marbles than yellow marbles does she have?

              Query:
              i would like to ask, besides the ‘Part-Whole Model’ to find out the number of red marbles, do we still have to draw the "Comparison Model" to find out how many more red than yellow marbles?

              TIA.

                hmm my method of drawing is different. I will draw the comparison model.
                But i will illustrate the total by a big curvy curve. maybe times have changed. are models given marks? otherwise i presume model to be drawn only to help you see the relationship.
