Although HCJC was only founded in 1974, do note that Chinese High School (Pre U - 高中) had already existed prior to that. Chinese High boys who could afford or qualify academically would further their pre-u education in 华侨高中。


Loong's Choices:

1) Catholic High did not offer Pre-U education;
2) Chinese High was historically too political, Chinese-dominant and lessons were conducted in classroom style; and
3) RI had a Pre-U arm (six-year programme before RJC was founded in 1982), but it was also classroom-based.


However, LKY wanted to better prepare our post-sec top students for university life (among a host of reasons you can find in old news articles/parliamentary debates official reports).

Hence, in 1965, he tasked the then Ed Min Ong Pang Boon to set up \"junior colleges\" in Singapore which were to be lecture/tutorial-based (thereby simulating the university system)

The junior colleges would admit students from all language streams to ensure integration between the ethnic groups, not just among the Chinese. Lessons would be conducted in English and GP would be a compulsory subject.

Against such background, NJC was founded in 1969, the exact year LHL was due to join Pre-U 1...He didn't have to choose it. It was... :censored:





Anyway, both are very good schools...doesn't matter whether PM was alumni or not. That PM didn't pick RI Pre-U at that time doesn't mean RI was not as good as NJC, right? :siam:

thought since Sir Stamford Raffles founded Sg, RI was the Top school, even back in 1969 ?
RI was founded in 1823, existed 146 years with thick history, before NJC

Maybe back then PM lead by example to send child to new school. It showed that even new school is a good school. Maybe back then it was even considerd neighbourhood school. Nowsadays very hard to find such lead by example example.

My daughter took eMaths and AMaths in O level she scored A1. She also did pure science and scored A2. But she did badly in Language B3 and C6 on humanities. Will she struggle when she takes H2/H1 economics. She’s planning to take H1 Geography instead. please advise if this is a good choice. thank you

I don't think any of the humans subjects I did in o levels were very much relevant to econs. I took pure lit, and elective geog/ss and had A1 for both, but my J1 year I scored S, and D for my econs at mid year and promos. Essay style is different, and likewise for concepts. (although globalisation in ss and a little bit of human geog eg. purchasing power may help a tiny tiny bit in your j2 year).

Thank you, do you think for a student that does not do well in humanities and language in O level, will
economics be a struggle? In your opinion and experience, which subject is easier to score economics or geography?

[/quote]Quite true, I think the most obvious reason was that LKY wanted to show that the JC system was a long term kind of investment and not just a 'one time do then forget about it', like certain neighboring country's public projects. True enough, the JCs eventually came to be the bedrock of our post-secondary education system.

Seems that its very hard to succeed in appeals. The posted JC keeps the student in school the entire day the entire week during orientation (which incidentally ends on the day that all JCs suppose to stop all appeals) and some schools keep the students’ phones probably so that the students cannot keep on ‘bugging’ their 'dream/ preferred JC for their appeals or even receive messages to go for auditions, etc. There seems also to be little movement this year (if the ‘top’ schools nobody move, those lower down the ranking have no vacancies to move to). Maybe this is another way in which the authority can propagate "all schools are good schools" and tell you that if you cannot make it to your preferred school then stay where you are!
