    Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?

      So in the name of diversity, we dumb down our brightest while other countries are grooming their best from young. This is what I fear if the bands get too big and we disallow acad DSA in future.

These \"brightest\" are the top 3-5% cohort, they are self driven and motivated, banding or no banding, I'm sure this group is always and will always be self-driven to achieve their personal best....

      Besides, just like current GEP prog embedded within the few pri schools, sec schools can continue to identify their own cream of crop and can always hv additional in-school special trainings be it acad or leadership.

      Will the brightest be short-changed? I think may not be necessarily....

      Sorry I wasn't clear enough in my post. I was referring to children who are way above my ds in academic abilities; like the top 10-20 in the whole level of 50,000. I'm concerned that these children won't be adequately challenged if they are balloted into any IP schs.

      It's at that level I'm saying. Somehow I have assumed that I was clear in my post when I wasn't.

        I think I understand what iRabbit is getting at. Whatever system we implement, we should not go to the extreme....like going in the broad banding direction, while it reduces stress, I hope we are also not over promoting mediocrity. Sometimes in such environment to make everyone less competitive, we may also end up making excellence a taboo to talk about. I would find such an end result very suffocating too as we artificially try to suppress good performance to make everyone feel good about themselves. That, would be a NIGHTMARE to me. :yikes:


        MERITOCRACY is still the fundamental principle and truly outstanding performance should still be celebrated without being frown upon or name-calling as elitism.

          I agree. I do not understand why excellent results have to be hush hush. In the past when my kids were in Primary School, I looked forward to reading abt top scorers in Singapore as I find their success stories inspiring n I will encourage my kids to read so that they can their best.

          Why do parents whose kids are not in the high ability range feel envious of others who perform better?

Government encourage to celebrate success in sports, music, etc. But why not celebrate success in academics as well? The kids who excel in academics also put in their hard work and effort to achieve this success, so why should we not recognise their effort and simply hush it?

                Please do not say that is adding pressure to other kids, I am sure the same can be said for music, sports, etc. as well.

                  After this change and parents still not happy, MOE can go back to the 1960s-70s system, no T-score, no grades, only 'Pass' or 'Fail', just go to the school MOE allocated :rotflmao:

                    What makes you think that the top 10-20 in academic abilities in the whole level can be identified at the sec 1 admissions stage when they cannot even be properly identified at the university admissions stage?

                    Even President's scholars can fail to get First Class Honours, while those with less than stellar PSLE, O-level and A-level results or come from unorthodox places manage to achieve it.

                    Only talking about academic abilities here har.

                      Even President's scholars can fail to get First Class Honours, while those with less than stellar PSLE, O-level and A-level results or come from unorthodox places manage to achieve it. I even know of an Oxford University prize winner from the Commerce stream. Nowadays to take Commerce stream must go to Millennia Institute. :razz:

                      Don't worry about the top 10-20 in the whole level. They will be able to find ways to challenge or amuse themselves.

                        Ah Ha...don't forget we still have NUSH which is 100% DSA, SST, SOTA...who knows government may come up with more specialized schools for such 龙中龙 and 凤中凤, I think we cannot deny that cream of crop always have plenty of opportunities as compared to the \"average guy\".

                        I firmly believe in meritocracy myself too and I agree that academic success should be celebrated, but having seen how my DS struggled with the systems, and seems like only he has mommy/tuition to help him, bcos in school, it is a reality that teachers cannot take care of the whole class of 40, (our teachers are indeed over-worked) it got me thinking if the government can do more to help such kids in the mid range as they move into sec school, who knows there are hidden gems yet to be discovered.

                        So I guess it will be interesting to watch how MOE balances between all these in the end. 😄
