      SA1 2014 Rosyth Vocabulary cloze

On Q25. How come answer is \"operation\" and not \"action\"?

So while this skill may come simply and (24) naturally to good readers, it is actually a two or three-step (25) process and struggling readers may trip up on one of those steps.

      Thanks!
'Operation' is more suggestive of multi-steps. However, I personally feel 'action' is a perfectly acceptable synonym.

        Pls hep!

        Synthesis:
Qn: When the results of the competition were announced, the team jumped for joy.
Ans: The team jumped for joy [upon] hearing the results of the competition being announced.
        Is this correct?
Ans sheet ans is The team jumped for joy upon the announcement of the results of the competition.

Yes. 'Upon' is a preposition and should be followed by a noun or noun equivalent. 'Hearing' is being used as a gerund, so is a noun equivalent.

        Hi, Joy of learning 111
Meaning my 1st answer is also correct right?

Nothing wrong with your Answer, but best not to alter the original sentence by inserting your own alien word "hearing". You just need to nominalise (verb->noun) "announced" to "announcement". Stay as loyal to the original as possible. Gerund or not is secondary IMHO.

Gerund or not is secondary IMHO.

In upper primary, students are taught to use the gerund after the prepositions 'despite' and 'in spite of', as well as the more familiar usage as the subject of a sentence.

In everyday British English, ‘anxiousness’ is a pseudo-word. It has a technical usage in psychiatry.
