Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?

Under the new PSLE system, those under affiliate schools might be better in getting into their choices schools?


There will be wide range of students on the same band. Those with affiliates will have a better chance if under the same band?

How do the GEP students be affected by this change then? I understand some GEP students may be strong in Math & Science but weak in languages.

Under the new psle banding, the sequence of your 6 choices schools, is very important

If affliated students want to go back to their affliated Secondary school, they must put it as first choice Secondary school, in their list of 6 choices

MOE mentioned that affiliation system will be kept but pending changes announcement. I think MOE will set a standard affiliation policy eg 2 points discount across the board rather than leaving it to the individual school or association to set the standard. I felt that this will be fairer to those without affiliation and this will also great reduce the stress of many parents and eliminate some of the large COP discrepancy between affiliate and non-affiliate student especially for some well sort after school. This will also reduce artificially high COP which further enhanced the image of elite school. So under the new system, the best COP is lower the better and I can foresees more than 4 schools will have a COP of 4 which expand the number of so call top school which we are already seeing now (after more students are scoring between 250~260) but still differentiated by a few points. Under existing system, the different in COP between RV and RI may be 7 points but under the new system, it may narrow down to 3/4, it will create an impression in parent’s mind that more schools are within the same range as those top school.

By standardising the affiliation cut-off will also indirectly reduce the P1 enrolment stress, like if you missed out in P1, you still have a high chance to get into it secondary school if you work hard. Again, this will give everyone a fairer chance to enter these school irregardless of your connections/background.

I feel a 10% probability of not getting into dream school despite working very hard is unfair. It will never happen under the old system. So, every year there will be 4,000 disappointed children. How are we going to tell our child to work hard in the future if they are balloted out? One day they will become 10% of the work force. Would the S1 bitter experience still haunt them? So, no need to work too hard as they don’t have as good luck as others? Or, is it parents’ responsibilities to make sure they bounce back? There are some children that just don’t bounce back or will be scarred by it.

If Moe were to really standardise minus 1 or minus 2 points across the board for affliated schools, then from 2021 onwards, won't see anymore following situation -

- affliated girls from NYPS entering NYGH for A level IP, discounted at 250
(because no more T score)

- affliated girls from SCGS / MGS entering O level Express, discounted at 220
(no more T-score)

- affliated girls from CHIJ Toa Payoh entering O level Express, discounted at 200
(No more T-score)

- affliated boys from Catholic High entering O level express, discounted at 240
(No more T-score)

- affliated boys from ACS (Junior), ACS (Primary) entering O level Express or Normal (Academic) / Normal (Technical), at Discount


They look at what AL score range instead, to determine whether student goto Express IP or to Express O level stream, or to Normal stream.

T-score, replaced by AL score !


Under the new \"AL\" PSLE granular Banding scheme -
The lowest score, to qualify for Express stream is : 20
above 20 : enter Normal stream

Normal stream : start from 21 onwards, to 30
children must score minimum at least AL7 or higher, for PSLE Maths and English, before can qualify for Normal stream

And will there be Poke mon Go in 2021?
Jokes aside, I wouldnt be so dismissive about the hurt, floppy. Like adults, kids , have that sense of fairness - you work hard, you do well but you cant because of the flip of a coin, that can be very painful and seem very unfair.

But I would agree that one school or another in the same tier, is not a bad deal at all. Dream school is only a perspective - most kids do not really know how one school is far better than the other holistically.

Not that I don't agree but so long as there's an advantage for P1 students to get into certain Primary Schools based on their parents' alumni status, the concept of what is fair in the education system is very artificial.

Then, what about children with learning difficulty, in languages?

Children who are dyslexic with Chinese language, or with English ?

If they gain exemption from Chinese : does it mean that the best score is 3, since only got 3 subjects to handle, less stressful once exempted from Mother tongue ?

With best 3 points : Top Tier Secondary schools still admit them in, even though they got exempted from Chinese ?
Is it fair, for Top Tier schools like RI / RGS, to admit them in, based on the fact that they were exempted ?

While lots of other children spent so much time, effort, struggling so hard to learn just one subject (Chinese), cannot get exempted no matter how hard they try to appeal, end up still have to take 4 subjects in the end, at PSLE ?

Besides children of genuine learning difficulty, many students also trying to seek exemption.
Eg
Those who claimed they were overseas, or try to gain exemption using "funny" reasons
