Game theory, enrichment, tuition...Not just in play in Singaporeans' lives. It's in other people's lives too, from North America and UK to North Asia, HK & TW included.superkiasudad:
After observing the level of interest in this whole AL grading on display here in Kiasuparents. I told my son's math tutor, Mr Zhou, that his centre should start offering a course on \"Game Theory\" for all the parents of this batch of primary 1 students. We had a good laugh at the absurdity of it.
Game Theory is in play, knowingly or unknowingly for most people, for most part of our lives.
Just live with it...we need to compete w others in this global village anyway.

work on the papers, e.g. planting 'killer' qns (ranging from levels 1-5 difficulty) in each section to sieve out the best from the better and good? :yikes:pirate:
10% is a lot. Poor kids who get knocked out due to a55luck.
The only way to reduce balloting is to make the sorting tool finer. And then we end up merely transferring the luck of the computerized balloting to the luck of whether the 'right' questions come out in the paper for the child.
actually it seems fair with a few killer qns to sieve out the the finest of finest
based on sch teachings on syllabus, kids should be taught to know how to do abt 80 to 85% of national exam- the rest of killer qn is used to identify \"diamond\" or \"platinum\" -
MyPillow:
The 'killer' qns should be used to identify who had enrichment, and carry negative marks if answered correctly.

No matter how MOE tweak the PSLE system, stress level among parents will always remain because everyone is still eyeing for the ultimate prize of getting their kids into the top secondary schools. As we all know that kiasuism is part of our Singaporean identity and culture, so no matter how the system is tweaked, kiasuism will still lead us back to the rat race of trying to compete for the limited place in elite schools. So instead of tweaking PSLE, perhaps MOE could invest more resources in improving the standard, facilities and branding of less popular secondary schools.
Ultimately parents will need to be mindful that its the kids who are carrying the weight and taking all the physical and mental "abuses" from extra classes, tuition, great expectation etc and what work for one kid might not work for the others. -

:siam:
In PSLE 2009, the killer questions (at least 5 of them) were 'planted' in Math. Those who are well-versed in Math Olympiad questions (from enrichment classes) were able to score well. It brought much stress to the batch taking PSLE 2010 but the 'math killers' didn't appear from then. Is History going to repeat itself and bring back the stress?

When did the G ever seek our advice before announcing and implementing policies?Technospaz:
From what I see right now, out of 100 votes, only 8 think that the new banding will help to reduce PSLE stress. I am not sure how the govt conducted the survey before announcing and implementing the new banding system with balloting and how they ascertain that the majority of the parents welcome these changes.

Ok, so 8 folks here are from MOE
I don't recall them doing it with the extremely popular population white paper either.
It's a nanny state.
1. The G is always right.
2. If you think the G is wrong, see 1.
(P/S: there's probably an Internet meme that says 70% welcome and sarpok these changes
)
Yep. Exactly 69.9% or approx 70% is the right figure! -

With all due respect you are giving too much credit to parents. No matter how MOE tweak the PSLE system, stress level among parents will always remain because everyone is still eyeing for the ultimate prize of getting their kids into the top secondary schools. if MOE invest more resources in improving the standard, facilities and branding of less popular secondary schools, then I happy other people children study there, my one goes to the top top wan -
At the end of the day, as parents, we are the ones who stress our kids not anyone else. i think we should not abscond that responsibility to the government or anyone else.
How many parents here are OK with their kids taking foundation subject, going to normal stream? Everyone is talking about her their children will missing out on the best schools under the new system because their kids will score 260+ under the current system. What if they canβt? Are they worth less because of that?
How many parents here are from GEP, SAP schools, scored 260+ for their PSLE? Iβm not and Iβm not sleeping on the streets. -

That one I think parents not OK also got no choice. Actually I have no idea what sort of T-score dd will get come PSLE. Her school is the type where Phase 2C also usually no ballot. This semester the science and maths mean for the cohort dropped to 68+. Yet some children apparently managed to get 100 for maths and/or 97.5 for science.

Solli. My time the score is 300+/400+ one. Dunno what that means though. Hee hee hee. -

Yup indeed! Maybe we should have a simple survey here on KSP huh? How high did we score for our own PSLE? And how high did our spouse score for PSLE? And how high are we expecting our child to score? Given that the syllabus is so much tougher for our kids' generation, are we being realistic? At the end of the day, as parents, we are the ones who stress our kids not anyone else. i think we should not abscond that responsibility to the government or anyone else.
