I had shared this before and I will share this again. Do not have high hope on getting the letter. My friend is a member and he volunteered faithfully and clocked more hours than the normal school PVs, but in the end he didn't get any letter and had to miss Phase 2B entirely. If only he volunteered in another school nearby, he would've gotten in. He had no choice but to go for a less popular school in Phase 2C.Can anyone share how many recommendation letters were given by Hokkien Huay Kuan? Someone felt that it all depends on that particular year. They look into a lot of factors if there are a lot members going to the schools then they may put a cut off point. They will not know in advance.
However, you will have to be prepared to do a lot of volunteer work. This means sacrifice your time for your child. Also you can volunteer what you have an interest in. However, you will have to be quick and fast. Extra effort is better than no effort.
The recommendations are to the school. You can check with them. -

I am a SHHK member and did some volunteer hours. Not enough to make a difference. Needless to say, I didn’t get a letter. Wasn’t expecting one either. I don’t know how they issue these letters or what criteria they use. Seems somewhat arbitrary to me. I’ve asked before but they can’t give any definitive basis for their determination.

I came across parents who have started doing PV at the schools when their children are only 2 years old now. According to them, they need to start now in order to be able to clock 100hours, too few volunteer jobs to clock enough hours so just have to start earlier.
Not sure if the 100 hours is actually set by SHHK or a 'safety guage' by kiasuparents

Some (not sure if now it's all) Hokkien Huay Kuan had stopped accepting pv back in 2014, so maybe this helps to reduce the competition for phase 2B as the main competition now comes from only Huay Kuan & RC.Can anyone share how many recommendation letters were given by Hokkien Huay Kuan? :yikes: these parents have foresight man. My eldest was like 3 y/o before I realized that I was late for kindy registration (recall some parents go queue at NYK once they get birth cert).

I think it's more a safety gauge than anything. During my time (application 7 years ago), tenure was more important - think the base was like maybe at least 4 years member for Ai Tong. Recall then that Ai Tong, TNS were the ones with 'fiercest' competition; those asking for CF, KH had it comparatively easy. Not exactly sure about NH but it is certainly a v popular school plus the population in vicinity seems to include loads of young couples. -

He saw other members had 300 overs hours. He got the letter for last year registration. Also another who joined since her dragon baby was born and has been clocking hours since then ... so 100 hours is probably not enough for dragon babies...

I heard that 40-50 hours was what they would typically be looking at.
However, I suspect that they have a quota each year and they then allocate the top no. of hours accordingly. So, if you happen to fall into a year where there are less PVs (or less active PVs) then a lower no. of hours may work. But, if you are in a year where there are many hardcore PVs then you're going to have to power-work your way towards endorsement.
In short, I don't think that there's a specific no. of hours which SHHK uses but rather they adopt a more Bell-curve-like approach.
That said, I've heard of PVs who receive endorsements and then, due to the crazed nature of TNS, do not get balloted in. So, it's rarely ever a certainty for those who go all out and volunteer. This is not to say that you shouldn't volunteer. I had a great time doing traffic control at the gate - it was a rewarding experience. While I didn't get an endorsement, I believe that I had helped in a small way
