      Busymom:

Are the organic soy milk fresh ones that come in packs? I have seen them in organic shops, but not in supermarkets.
Nope, it was powdered formula, he mentioned he could not find in Singapore. His kids were in KL Malaysia, when they were infants, now 11 and 13 liao...

        Busymom:
When is a good age to wean off milk for children, whether it's formula milk or fresh milk? My 6yo DD still has to drink her bottle of milk before she sleeps at night or before afternoon nap. Without it, I don't think she could sleep.

I would prefer not to give her fresh milk, pretty much for the same reason as mentioned by adhdadhd. Also heard from some people that cow's milk is meant for cow, not humans. Plus, allergies run in our family, it seems that she could not consume too much dairy products (we had some bad experience with Yakult).

        :?:
Busymom, from a nutitional perspective, you have to consider finding a calcium replacement if you want to cut out milk. Milk is not the only or the best source of calcium (leafy dark green vegetables is), but it is the easiest for most of us. Our pede says that kids need the amount of calcium found in 2 cups of milk per day till they're about 9yo when the foundational build up of calcium is highest. But thereafter, daily calcium replacement is still necessary.

We had to stop the milk because DS gets eczema. But lately the eczema has gotten worse although we've already stopped the milk 😒 , so got to stop more food items πŸ˜› .

Thanks, Blobbi... cos' I was about to ask why is it necessary to drink milk, although I did think the answer is most probably calcium. Actually, I didn't consume any fresh milk during my second pregnancy. Neither did I take my calcium supplement... (btw, I am not advocating anyone to follow that). Instead, I drank soy milk (the powdered type), took lots of food that is known to contain calcium including dark green vegetables. After DS was born, I didn't have any dental problem, unlike my first pregnancy... (there's an old saying that woman will lose a tooth with each pregnancy, right?). Thus, I fully subscribe to relying on natural food sources.

Apart from dairy products, do cut down processed food such as ham and sauages, as well refined sugar which is found in cakes and chocolates, etc. 😒

Thanks. Powdered form would have been moree convenient... 😞

              Funz:
It is recommended that children should drink milk even up to their teens. Just that the type and qty has to be adjusted as they grow. Cannot remember where I read it but if I remember correctly, by the age of 1yr old, good to switch to fresh milk, low fat or not depending on whether the kid is overweight. And when in their tweens, start switching to low fat fresh milk.

Milk need not be cow's milk, can be soya or goat's.
Funz, thanks for your advice. Only thing is, we have tried other types of milk before, but my children don't like them... 😞
              Funz:
Busymom, for your DD, if I read correctly, she is still on the milk bottle at night? If that is the case, get rid of the bottle, switch to cup. That might wean her off her powdered milk.
This is one of those things that I say I'll do, but never really get down to doing it...
              Funz:
I switched them to fresh milk when they were about 1+yrs old. And now, DD will alternate with soya and fresh milk depending on her mood whilst DS is purely fresh milk. Even myself, I am taking unsweetened soya milk almost daily.
What sort of soya milk and fresh milk do you give to DD?
              Funz:
I had a nutritionist visiting my centres to access the kids' milk and fibre intake. And her feedback to us was most Singaporean kids are not taking enough milk and vege.
Yes, it's really quite hard to get children to eat enough vege. Surprisingly, I have less problem with DS as compared to DD in this area.

It takes a while for kids to adapt to a new type of food. Especially one that is to replace a favorite of theirs.

I am an advocator or no pacifier and weaning kids off milk bottle by the age of 2+ latest 3yrs old. But I also know that it can be a challenge and sometimes, when you see the look of total bliss on your kid when they get the bottle, where to find the heart to take it away from them. πŸ˜‰ But I also believe that pacifiers impedes speech development and screws up the teeth alignment and milk bottles promote tooth decay especially if the kid does not brush his teeth after the bottle or falls asleep while on the bottle.

I prefer fresh soya milk from the stalls in the market where you can see them making fresh batches. But I will also get those from the chiller like Nutrisoy or Sobe. There was another thread where a parent mentioned that she has a soya milk making machine. Tempted to get that. Nothing beats fresh homemade stuff.

I am not a major fan of organic stuff. Maybe that's the skeptic in me. We won't truly know if all the stuff they put in there are organic. For all we know, it can be the same as those non-organic stuff and they just stick an organic sticker on it and sell at 1.5 times the price of non-organic stuff.

SIL brought kid for diagnosis. They found high content of mercury in the boy's brain. :?:

Scary right? Mercury can cause all sorts of funny diseases... no joke. πŸ™ Salmon fish contains certain % of heavy metals, i think.

Wonder where we can test for mercury. Me and both my kids like to eat fish and I'm a bit worried. I asked my doc before but he said it's not neccesary to test but I think I'd better do it.

SIL brought him for testing at one of the private hospital. The specialist clinic is for treating austism and other brain conditions for children. Quite expensive.

Mercury can cause cancer? Our old dental fillings also have mercury.... 😒 :stupid: must scold the dentists at Pegu Road.

His temper is very bad..... He will scream and shout if he is not satisfied with anything.

Left handed is a headache. How to teach them writing? Chinese is upside down.

                    Siong 😒

But some say left-handed people are more intelligent, as they use more of their right brain :celebrate:

My experience with Left-handed pple..... 😐 They are explosive like this :x Get angry easily.

Every morning, the mouse will fly to the floor when my colleague's computer fails to boot up. Then we will hear %*#$ all the rubbish words. 😒 Scary.. Occupational Hazard. πŸ™

                      Could he be ambidexrous?
Does he write with his right hand at times, have no 'fixed' hand for watch, fork and spoon?
                      I have that condition.. ...

He does everything with Left. I want to correct him before K1. But my wife stopped me. Right handed is easier to teach. 😞

                        Busymom,

same as u, while I was preggy, my body couldn’t tolerate the lactose intake,I puked after drinking milk and taking calcium pills and not a fan of soy milk either (but a big fan of green leafy vegs, ESP spinaches, I can eat a whole plate), my ds still born large at 3.8 kg w/o any calcium supplements. My gynae said we Asians’ genes are not pro-milk therefore it’s ok to skip milk. I guess our rich diet give us a very well balanced nutrients which milk is not important. In our younger days, all 5 of us stop drinking milk before k1 but everyone is healthy, strong and above average size, all thanks to mum’s delicious healthy homecook meals everyday. So providing our child/ren with fresh, healthy and wide varieties of food is the key to healthy living!
