What is wrong with our system?

All income is taxable. Even if you win TOTO, you still must pay tax. The government employs some very clever people to chase taxes, don't even think about cheating, they will find you and the penalty is heavy.
May be the data is based in IRAS input, which may not be accurate. Example, a humble technician in stat board, runs a successful tuition centre. Another technician night time, import/export fruits from overseas. These technicians official salaries only 3k. But have side lines.
How many humble technicians do you know run successful tuition centres ? I also wish to have a sideline that earns thousands of dollars a month, how come I cannot do it ?
I live in the HDB heartland, where most Singaporeans live. All my neighbours and are not well off. Please do proper research before making any assumptions.
Non-graduates in the private companies I work before mostly earning at least 4/5k, have few properties, 2 cars. I think they married early and made $ with the HDB plus shares bull-run. My site sup made 18k in shares 1 day, sometime in 1996. Many examples. Some pple drive taxis at night, day time engineers.
I don't stay in a well-off HDB estate. But I look at the carpark, so many new big cars. My neighbor is a van driver, he just ditched his van and bought a new car! I hv the smallest car....
Probably we missed the boats. May be we never take risk.
I am still trying to find out why..... :? -

I suppose it is also important to note that the richest one is not necessary the happiest one....
for the very poor ones, if must worry about their next meal, can hardly be happy either -

Life is short, remember some of us want to be entrepreneurs, scientists, etc. to pursue our dreams, before we surrender our ICs.
Don't say liddat, really when kids study primary school it is like we study another time with them! :hi5:Donkey Kong:
ok, very simple, kids study primary school is like we study another time for them! :celebrate:
So to answer your question, there is nothing wrong with our system...just something wrong with the way we try and keep up with the Joneses, oops, the Tans, Ngs and Lees.... :stupid:
Where got time to study another PSLE with kids? Study PSLE again I doubt will help us in our scientific discovery
Eureka
Some of us need to set up Acer, MSI, TSMC, etc. to make Singapore proud... this is our homeland. Creative is losing steam. We need to build up our brand names.
PSLE should be left to the teachers, I guess. When we have these big brand names, Singaporeans will hv jobs! :celebrate: IRs still own by FTs. -

Donkey Kong, don't mind if I be quite honest yah?
(say upfront first mah!) The \"ordinary\" uncles/aunties who put those money into Lehman Bros either put them there to get their kids through overseas college and uni education; or had those CPF money leh! Blood money meant for retirement. The Car showroom and condo showrooms packed with ppl buying are ppl who buy on credit and then have to pay the bank loads of interest. So things may not seem what they appear to be at first flush.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for striving for excellence and the \"good things in life\" but we need to remember that these things do come with a sacrifice - could be time away from family, sleep, worry, etc etc all for the name of progressing onself. It really all boils down to what YOU think is important in your life and HOW you want to live it!
So to answer your question, there is nothing wrong with our system...just something wrong with the way we try and keep up with the Joneses, oops, the Tans, Ngs and Lees.... :stupid: -

We shouldn't feel sour just b/c some people around us with less qualification earning more than us. How rich a person is not simply a factor of eduational level. A lot depends on the circumstances, network and someone's ability to seize opportunities. You only see people making $$ in the stock mkt, how about thousands of others who lost money or even broke when the mkt crashed? For sure they won't be going around broadcasting it.Non-graduates in the private companies I work before mostly earning at least 4/5k, have few properties, 2 cars. If you keep comparing with other people, you'll never be happy but turn into a sour grape

agree, it is not a mathematics equation after all... just like what csc said, it all boils down to contentment level. definition of rich and poor is subjective to begin with....jesschan:

Malaysia has Proton, Perodua, Nascar, etc. plus many nice sceneries....
Okto was showing the Cameron Highland Tea Plantation.. So nice... Vegetables, eggs, meat, fishes, water (fresh).
Just wish to retire at a peaceful malaysian kampong.
We have only exams....
So crowded everywhere, no peace.
Still ok with our system..
