2016 PSLE Results & Secondary Posting Discussions

MArVeLIciOUS:
A simple program with the pre-determined criteria could assign the schools to each of these 38,000+ students instantly but a human being needs to analyse the posting results performed by the computer program. What are the COP for schools? If out of 200 students with the same COP, only one student gets into that school, then maybe we should also remove that one student from that school too. If only 10 students got assigned to this school only, then maybe we should move these 10 students to their next school choice and do not assign any students to this school....and so on. There are issues to consider other than just assigning a sec school to each of the 38,000+ students. I do not think releasing the sec school posting results late to make appeals difficult is a rationale.
It should be really easy to compute the Sec 1 posting results once the 6 choices are submitted by 30th Nov. With the database of the 38,000+ submissions, an intermediate Excel programmer can use the not too complex functions of VLOOKUP, IF, etc to get the results out, literally in an instant.
But it makes sense that they release it late to make appeals difficult...... -
The allocation of students to school is based on merit, so the system will sort highest scorer to lowest. Then it will assign the school for the highest student based on his choice and vacancies of his choice school. First choice got vacancies will assign to him, if not move to his second choice. Once he is done, system move on to next highest. All these rules are easily done with programming rules as long as all schools have entered the number of vacancies available into the system.
The cop is only known after posting is done as by then they will know what is t score for last vacancy.
I think there are other ‘hidden reason’ that they release posting so late. -

I get it why so many people like conspiracy theories. However, there are times when the simplest explanation is often the best one.

Sorting results based on merit is a simple process. However, when complications appear, the best algorithm cannot cater for every single possible scenario (and human intervention is required). See alng earlier example of school cohort not meeting minimum threshold. The process will probably have to be re-run again, because we don't know whether the extra 10 students who have to be re-posted is going to affect the COP of the new school (and bumping out someone else). Even the sorting hat with a far easier task of allocating a pupil to 4 schools couldn't make up its mind on Harry, and MOE has hundreds of school to consider (and decision to close down a school cannot be made lightly).
Also, people tend to forget that in the civil service there are lines of reporting. The employee running the results will probably have to repeat the process if a decision is required (see above) and can only forward for final approval (which may involve a number of bosses) once satisfactory. This takes time and given that this is a process that can trigger a civil war in Singapore if handled improperly, due care must be given. Unless parents are happy that a junior staff can finalize the first result that a faceless computer generates, we should all learn to take it easy and learn the virtue of patience.
P/S: On conspiracy theories, I do believe Elvis is still alive and the USA government is covering the Roswell UFO incident. Just saying. -

quite a number of neighborhood sch cut off for express is 188 ( no need affiliation) - but parents need to make co -decision
some affiliated schools 188. for some with no affiliation, it's 200.alwayschoi:
hi
does anyone know what was the minimum score to be eligible for Express/Normal(Academic) this year ?
my dd got 187 and it was for Normal(Academic), hence she was not able to apply for Express. just curious that how many marks she lacked to have Express/Normal(Academic).
my daughter got 161 posted to Normal Academic...she was very disappointed but i am happy because it is a big improvement from prelims. work hard next year, your daughter can still make it to express.
with child to choose express or NA for this results - getting 188 may allow the child to go NA stream in a sch with better teaching n learning processes ...vs entering into a typical neighbourhood sch express stream :scratchhead: -
Just for discussion, how the sorting based on merit works? How merit is ranked? It is clear for non SAP schools. However, for SAP schools, the computer system can sort them in two ways.
In descending order.
Sorting example 1: Priority to HMT
256
255+1
254+2
253+3
255
254+1
253+2
252+3
continue …
Sorting example 2: Priority to main T-score
256
255+3
255+2
255+1
255
254+3
254+2
254+1
254
253+3

Anyone can feedback which sorting is used (1) or (2)? Or there is (3)? -

for daughter's affiliated sec, below 200 will be NA stream.

188 in express stream may be a little stressful if grouped in a class of students who have 200. -

When applying to SAP schools, bonus points form part of your score. Hence,
(1) 255+3, 255+2, 254+3 is > 256
(2) 255+1, 254+2 = 256
In the even that (2) requires a tie break, SC > PR and others. If there is still a tie, say between two SC, the one with the higher unrounded aggregate score will be posted into the school first. Therefore, 256 > 255+1 > 254+2. -

Can do what my \"dear\" sister did when her twin sons took PSLE a few years back.
But year after year the holiday windows remain by and large the same. Either you fly out:jetsetter:
Not so much about prep... just that the S1 release date is neither here or there. Cannot take a longer overseas vacation in 2nd half of Dec.
Will let son chill till end of the year. Just give him some mental preparation & maybe get some humanities related reading material from library. Otherwise, think he deserve some break after meeting his target in PSLE & start everything anew in when sec 1 starts. That's when the madness begins all over again.
1. After PSLE (if no other DC in pri sch) or last week of SA2, back before result on mid- Nov; or
2. Book end-Nov till mid-Dec; or
3. Book Christmas Eve till end-Dec.
Anyway, it's more expensive to travel in the 2nd half of Dec, not to mention it'll be brrrrrrr....colder. Of course, I understand some working parents can only take long leave in late Dec.
They flew off right after submitting their school choices and didn't come back till the day before
school starts. Before flying off, my sister made copies of their results, testimonials, references,
etc and left them with me, along with proxy letters, and a big chart of if...then...else, ie if admitted to
school A, then no appeal, else appeal for school B, etc, etc.
In the end, it was this uncle who had to take leave and report to the 2 different Sec Schools (one in
the East, the other in Central) on behalf of the 2 nephews. Then traveled to 4 other schools to submit
appeals. :slapshead:
:salute: :salute:
Whoa! Nice uncle you are! I know friends who are unable to change their hol plans, or simply \"chill\", will get proxies to run the errand for them. They said, \"Come what may, my kid and I still want that well-deserved break!\"
Wh didn't u help appeal for the twins to be placed in the same school? Unless their t-scores are very far apart like the earlier e.g. shared by a poster. :scratchhead: -
BigDevil:
No, my sorting (2) is as per my original post.KSP002016:
Sorting example 2: Priority to main T-score
256
255+3 <-- think you mean 253 + 3?
255+2 <--- 254 + 2?
255+1
255
254+3 <--- 252 + 3?
254+2 <--- 253 + 2?
254+1
254
It means the sorting is from 256 to 255 to 254 etc based on T-score. HMT gives priority but T-score decides the ranking.
Sorting (1) is 256 to 255 to 254 etc based on (T-score + HMT), Means 254+3 is higher rank than 256+0.
