actually I am quite optimistic about the changes esp the part about dropping DSA Acad general (which means gepper or other acad generalists will be marginalised). Imagine no if gepper or acad generalists and seriously how many MO gold or platinum winners do we have.....

I foresee more DSA spaces will be given out to second tier MO specialists for the top IP schools....
Yes, once P6 Gepper generalists free up the space : their places will goto those who enter by high T-score, via Sec 1 MOE posting

in other words, from 2019 :
Geppers (generalists) have to rely on their own PSLE T-score to enter top IP schools, if they do not have specific academic subject, to DSA, nor possess any specific Sports / Arts / leadership skill.

But then, Geppers get into GEP course (P4 onwards) in the first case, is because the students are already strong in both English & Maths, after sitting for P3 two round of Screening tests. Hence, they can consider DSA by English, or Maths (specific subject domain), since these are subjects they are already strong in, since P3.

yep, agree this is a more fairer & holistic move. general academic should not be classify under distinctive talent .... but \"they\" had already choked up so many seats since DSA started yrs ago ! anyway if a child 's academic talent is built up & aided by expensive tuition ,v soon tyre will puncture in a competitive IP environment or JC - harder fall with deeper impact then šŸ˜“

For the weaker ones, i.e. near NA/NT borderline, they need to worry.

But for the stronger ones, there's no need to worry, as majority would have gone for \"better\" schools with higher COP, instead of their own affiliation school.

It's the sandwiched group that I'm curious about. E.g. if more than 20% of affiliates meet the COP 220 of SCGS, are they going to take in based on affiliates' t-scores (highest get in first until the last seat is taken).

Are they going to ballot if there's a tie?

besides SCGS, MGS @ 220 COP (for affliates) also same

plus ACS Barker, + PLMGS (@ 205 COP, for affliates), + Geylang Methodist, + a number of CHIJ schools (@ 200 COP, for affliates), + St Margaret, St Andrew, Maris Stella, etc

a lot of mission schools, are affected

It was written that the requirement of 20% reserved for non-affiliated students affects only 6-7 schools in Singapore as majority of the affiliated sec schools already takes in more than 20% of non-affiliates.

heard that the last 2 years (Year 5 & 6) in Junior Colleges are very competitive

I guess it's just to inform readers 'as of now, 6-7 affiliation schools will be affected by the 20% quota'. Not so sure about the part I underlined though.

Regardless of the status quo this year, this policy change will affect ALL affiliation schools effective 2019.

Nothing earth shattering. Abolition of General acad domain should have been announced last year after the talks by those MPs

You should take note of this instead.

Somehow i have this feeling that most of the affected schools will be able to meet this, ie, historically, they had this % of non affiliated kids in their schools

                  This 20% imposed :-
Is it referring to 20% of the entire Sec 1 cohort in the Secondary school, or refering to 20% of O level students ?

For those 6 or 7 O-level Affliated Secondary schools reported to be impacted, in the straits times article -
First, have to check how many Total number of O level classes they open for latest 2017 Secondary 1 cohort in their own school,
& the number of students head-count, inside each or per O level class.
Then minus off 20% reserved or set-aside for outsiders (non-Affliated) to come in, with the balance of 80% vacancies left, are they still enough to accommodate all the affliated students to come back, who managed to meet the Affliated COP?

                  If enough :
then no issue for Affliated primary school students, to go back O level Affliated Sec school.

The constraint is on the number of O level classes they open up, for Sec 1 cohort, and how many students per class ?

Article did not mention names of these 6 or 7 Sec schools, impacted.

You people think the moe did this without first consulting all affected parties and agree on a workable number?

For schools like ACS (Baker Road) which takes in almost 100% of their affiliated students (regardless of their t-score), there will be an impact.

However, for schools like SCGS where the secondary school is already taking in more than 20% non-affiliated students, then there is no real impact. As to whether SCGS will raise their affiliated COP, that is another story.

some mission schools are rather unique : in that although they're from another schools, yet they happen to be affliated to the same SJI Secondary.

                        example

St Stephen primary & De La Selle primary

from the view point of SJI Secondary : definitely, hit more than 80%, because need to consider affliated students, coming from another two more additional schools (St Stephen + De La Selle), over & above consider his own affliated school cohort (from SJI Junior)
