For P6 DSA students, who are offered CO, by end of 2017 August 31, by Raffles Institution -
What they are being offered, is an IP course for 6 years ahead, all the way directly up to A level, bypassing O level. The phrase, \"bypassing O level\" : means no need to sit for O level.
So, all these current 2017 P6 students, when they begin / start afresh in January 2018 as Sec 1 cohort or freshmen : all will study IP academic curriculum.
However, in the course of the 6 long years ahead, from 2018 all the way up till 2023 GCE A level, starting from middle of Sec 1 Semester 1 onwards, RI teachers will start monitoring, very closely : who are the ones from 2018 Sec 1 cohort, that begin to show signs of academic struggle , unable to cope with the rigor of RI IP?
Yes, there are regular Term tests, to check on their Semester progress.
Students who show sign of struggle : can include those who entered by PSLE T-score, i.e. able to meet RI Cut-off-point at around 260, as well as include those who had entered by DSA.
Along the way, Teachers would have identified : who are these students, that cannot cope ?
Then, school will open up \"O\" level on-demand class for them, preparing them to sit for O level, in 2021 Secondary 4.
This class is formed only, on \"demand\" basis, meaning, as and when it is required. Hence, this class is actually for dropouts, of RI IP program.
After these small group of students have sat for their O level : they are free to continue education, in Sg, or prefer go overseas.
After O level, some of these students may want to continue their A level in RI (if school permit them to), while others who feel embarrassed because their fellow peers know that they are from the O level class, prefer to go elsewhere, start afresh elsewhere where nobody know their background, to continue their education.
Conclusion
Right from the beginning, at the point of offered 2017 P6 DSA offer, by end of 31 August, everyone to pursue IP curriculum.
Along the way (during the long journey of 6 years), when casualty arise : some will be identified by Form / subject Teachers, to sit for O level, instead.
Those NOT identified along the journey, means they are coping ok with IP : will sit for 2023 GCE \"A\" level.

When DS was in Year 1, there were 14 Year 1 classes. 13 classes were doing Raffles Programme (RP) and 1 class was doing Raffles Programme Differentiated (RPD). RP classes are IP. RPD class is for DSA boys that have t-score 250 or below (or was it 240? I am not sure). RP and RPD have different curriculum.
At the end of Year 2, RP students who have GPA higher than 2.4 and RPD students who have GPA higher than 2.8 will continue in Year 3 RP. Those who don't make the grade will progress to O-level class. They can still go to RJC if they meet the cut-off point.
DS has friends that started in RP but ended up in O-level class. He also has friends that started in RPD in Year 1 but made it to RP class in Year 3. DS noted that those started in RPD but made it to RP are usually extremely hard working. Their dilligence put DS to shame. Those started in RP but ended up in O-level class usually is either not putting enough effort, addicted to playing computer games, have family problems, etc.
Don't join RI if your DS still needs hand holding or need to be pushed to study. You know your DS the best. You will only harm your DS if he gets into RI but struggling in it academically. In my opinion, one needs t-score above 255 to not struggle academically in RI, provided not addicted to computer games or have family problems. If less than 255, must really really work very hard. It is not walk in the park for these kids. You can ask your DS's form teacher for an estimated t-score if you need to decide whether to accept RI's CO or not. This is jmho. Please don't :torchme: me
Is the RPD class a 4-year programme leading to the O levels right from the start, i.e. in Yr 1?
Or is it a \"wait-and-see\" class, in that this class is for the boys who get COs and, in the PSLE, meet the express entry threshold of 200 (or 188 or whatever) but get less than 250 (or 240), and RI will monitor them for the first 2 years to see whether they can make it to the IP programme in Yr 3? -

Thanks, phtthp. So I guess this means that a CO from RI in the DSA does not automatically translate into a CO into the RI IP. The boys must score at least 250 (or 240) to be admitted into an IP class. For boys with less than 250 (or 240), the COs get them entry into the RPD class(es) and a chance to work their way into the IP classes.Based on what ngl2010 described -

For RI and HCI, any idea how the Year 1 classes are grouped? Is it random, by T-score, or gep vs mainstream?

There is no RPD class for 2016 cohort (sec 1 this year). For 2016 cohort, all CO from DSA sports irregardless of their T score are mixed with the rest; according to CCA specific (e.g. In some classes, there will be 2 groups of CCA). However, the geppers are still grouped within themselves, no DSA sports. Currently, there is no change of class for first 2 years. By end of year 2, boys are then regrouped according to subject combinations based on results.
JMHO below:-
Reflecting on doing away with RPD for 2016 cohort; the existence of O level class at year 3 probably arises out of necessity and not so much of a definite occurrence.
Student dynamics varies from year to year, so not surprising for schools to exercise flexibility in their DSA polices to get students of their best fit. Schools knows best. So will there be RPD for 2017 cohort and in future, no one knows.. only Time will tell... it's more relevant for parents and DC to attend DSA talks and find out latest updates directly from school during open house... whatever posted are just time specific information for that cohort... -

Back to what it used to be.
There wasn't any RPD during my DS' time (DS is in Y6 this year). All students did RP, regardless if they were from GEP, Mainstream or Sports classes.
