Affiliated Schools and their COPs

What I can suggest as a possible strategy is, a “cross-pollination” of sorts among the various Catholic schools.

So for eg a boy from SJI Junior who does not meet SJI Secondary’s affiliate COP, can apply to St Pat’s as 1st choice, and St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary as his 2nd choice, St Gabriel’s Secondary as his 3rd choice...

And likewise for the CHIJ schools. A girl from eg CHIJ TPY Primary who does not meet the affiliated COP for CHIJ TPY Secondary, can apply to CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent as her 1st choice, CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent as her 2nd choice, CHIJ Katong Convent as her 3rd choice...

Still got some “familiar” safety net right?

Seems like they have already been re-distributing themselves all these years. I notice the better scorers from St Stephen's boys will traditionally head to SJI, whilst the weaker ones stay put in St Pat's.

Maybe you're right it's not that dire for the Catholic boys schools as phtthp noted they only take in the boys of St Anthony and De La Salle, so they won't hit the 80% quota easily, despite generously receiving from 3 affiliate juniors. :evil:

Moreover, before I forget, the ministry also announced that ALL secondary schools can take in 20% students via DSA. Perhaps this policy enables these affiliated secondary schools to 'rescue' their brethren thru DSA sports or arts by accepting them all under their wings

RE: Low teacher:pupil ratio yields better performance in O levels. I don't know if AGO will allow that kind of luxury to exist...These are not Pathlight or Northlight. Already the recently merged schools have been experiencing falling enrolments.

I was wondering if MOE is trying to divert ousted affiliates (assuming they will need to leave non-affiliate seats unfilled like you speculate) to those currently under-enrolled merged secondary schools? In a way, they will get students to mix with peers from diverse backgrounds. Break up the solidarity and redistribute them to the neighbourhood govt schools. This govt is trying to get people to interact with one another. :roll:

If anyone needs convincing about the usefulness of affiliation priority, let me share a case example.


My niece scored 221 for her PSLE. Her primary school is a regular heartland neighborhood school, no affiliation. At 221, she cannot qualify for Crescent Girls School (240) nor St Margaret’s (240), both considered good schools for girls in the West side of the island.

She entered Hua Yi Secondary instead, a nondescript neighborhood school near Jurong. Received mediocre O level results and now at Poly because missed Anderson JC COP.

At 221, if she was from the affiliated primary school, she could have gone to MGS Secondary (221), or SCGS Secondary (220). Far more reputable schools, and without distraction from rowdy hormonal boys.

I found the answer. If 80% has been filled up by affiliates (Affiliates fill vacancies first before non-affiliates), the extras will be considered alongside other non-affiliates based on their AL scores/Tscores until the last vacancy is filled.

If near Jurong, not hitting AJC COP (12/12) would not have been such a big deal.
I would assume using PJC / JJC (17 /14) as a yardstick would have made more sense.

Thanks! Great research skills! So that solves your “worry” of leaving classroom seats empty. All will be filled. The non-affiliate COP will then stabilize over time to reflect the demand more accurately.

Yes. I think you're right that DSA intake is counted under the 20% even though the students come from feeder schools. This way the school can still save the feeder students who are not accepted through DSA as part of the 80%.

Actually, I don’t think that comes into the DSA consideration at all. Schools now have limited slots to take in talents via DSA and we can see the competition is high from the DSA threads. I may be wrong but I really doubt the secondary school trials and interviews will scan for weaker students from their affiliate primary schools to give them the slots to "save" them.
