Hi,
Can anyone share with me how is the academic and discipline of PHS? What is the O level 2018 results entry to JC and Poly? -
I am one of an ex-student from PHS in 1993-1997.
This is a good school. One of the better secondary school around Ang Mo Kio Area.
The normal academic students:
Back then, the normal academic stream kids are very motivated due to the christian culture that is inculcated into the school system. Everyday, we would have flag-raising ceremony and prayers in the morning. The kids in the school are well behaved; a good mixture of business-class family and neighourhood family.
Opportunities to be promoted to Express streaming:
I was a normal stream child and I got integrated into express streaming in my secondary 3 subsequently. The express level in the top 3 classes is usually the elitees. I major in three sciences back then.
The normal technical students:
The normal Technical students have strong product design skills to showcase PHS works. They are usually the winners in technical competitions.
The niche CCAs:
PHS has strong Christian values and they believe in aflame for truth. A well balanced of identifying the kids’ talents and academic scores. I was a national schools volleyball player in 1996/1997. The school adopted a holistic approach to acknowledge each individual strength and weakness. The weaker students during the secondary school days may not be able to study well but when I look at them now, they are entrepreneurs of their own.
The school believes in setting the right values and attitude towards excellence in a lifetime and not just academic. They support the students spiritually as teenagers usually goes through huge yoyo mood swing during this period.
If you child is unable to enter the top elite schools such as RI/Hwa Chong or Catholic, Presebyterian, st andrew secondary school, st patrick is the way forward.

Thank you for your feedback. My ds has just completed his DSA trial and pending a CO offer from PHS. It is important that the school provides a good learning environment for kids and caring Teachers and managed their Yo-yo mood swing during the teenager days.👍🏻

I studied in Presbyterian High School (PHS) from 1994 to 1997. Let me share my experience.
My mum chose PHS as the 4th out of 6th choice of secondary school for me because of its relatively close proximity to our house. Although we are a non-Christian family, my mum did not take into account that PHS is a Christian missionary school. Moreover, she was expecting me to be posted to either of the first 3 choices of secondary school based on my primary 6 preliminary examination results. Unfortunately, I did not perform as well as expected and had obtained an aggregrate score of only 210/300 for my Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). Hence, I was posted to PHS.
During the registration day, I was disappointed upon seeing the old PHS building which was quite run down. In fact, it was older than my primary school building. My mum also had the concern of PHS potentially requesting for big donations from parents to fund the school facilities upgrading programmes should there be any. However, throughout my 4 years in PHS, there was only 1 occassion where all students had to help to raise funds for upgrading a school facility.
I experienced culture shock during the first day of school. After we (new students) assembled at the car park, the principal welcomed us with a short speech. After that, he shared with us the story of Adam & Eve from the Bible and led us for a prayer. We were politelly told to bow our heads and close our eyes for the prayer. For someone like me who is a non-Christian and had never attended any church service before, it was indeed uncomfortable at first. As time goes by, I began to accept the new school environment and even looked forward to prayer sessions and singing Gospel songs.
Discipline in PHS was much stricter than my primary school as the school highly embraced Christian values. There was a pastor stationed in the school and most of the teachers were Christians. The pastor and Christian teachers actively engaged students either through the short daily prayer session or weekly assembly. Due to the school’s missionary background, most of the teachers were caring and willing to go the extra miles to help students in their personal problems as well. Sometimes I felt that the teachers treated us like their children more than their students.
The school placed much emphasis on character development and expected all students to strive for success in both academics as well as Co-Curricular Activities (CCA). Every student was required to choose at least one CCA and have at least 70% attendance or participation in the chosen CCAs in order to gain points for Junior College (JC) or Polytechnic admission. Students who were repeatly absent for CCA wihtout valid reason were counselled and sent to detention class. Every CCA group took competitions seriously and practised very hard for them as the school believed in giving the best in everything we do.
When I was in secondary 2, my form teacher who was also my English teacher called my house phone (mobile phone was uncommon during that era) and scolded me for not submitting homework and reminded me to submit it to her the moment I reach school later that day (lower secondary classes were in afternoon session during that time). Fortunately, she did not demand to talk to my parents. There were also many remedial classes especially during upper secondary years to help students who were weaker in a particular subject to catch up. Despite failing my Additional Mathematics tests and examinations constantly during my upper secondary years, my teacher never gave up on me or forced me to drop off this subject so as not to pull down the overall score and thus affect the school’s ranking. Instead, she motivated me to work harder and gave me (and all other weaker students) remedial lessons. Without her, I probably would not be able to pass this subject, not to mention obtaining a B3 grade in this subject for O’levels. Because of all the hard work, support and motivation from the teachers, I did better than expected for O’levels.
Overall, I feel that my school days in PHS is one of the most fulfilling period of my life. I am very grateful for the nuturing environment and caring teachers who inculcate Christian values that developed my potential as a total person worthy of God and man. Although PHS is not an elite or well-known school, I would undoubtedly choose it as 1st choice if I could return back in time and start all over again. -

Does the school allow external CCA like Golf? My son is playing competitive golf for the last few years.
