Hi , is it very poor to score MSG 3.333 for term 1 ? Will the marks slowly improve after end of the yr? Thanks

Personally to me, MSG 3.333 for Term 1 is not a good start. But it serves as a wake up call to buckle up for other tests and assignments which are 15% of the overall MSG. Of course more effort have to put in to the end of EOY which is 60% of the overall MSG. Although Term 1 holds 10% of the overall, but things get harder to score if your dd did not manage well. It is not about the marks will slowly improve automatically after the end of the year. It depends whether there is effort make from your daughter to improve the overall MSG at the end of the year. May I ask which level is your dd in this year?

Absolutely spot on. The results can go either way depending on how much effort is put in. There won't be an automatic improvement - effort needs to be put in.

Since WA1 has the smallest weightage of the year, the results can improve if the scores are better in the higher-weightage tests as the year progresses. On the other hand, if the foundation in the topics are not strong and the learning attitude is negative, then it can also get harder to do well as the tests will build on the topics throughout the year.

Having said that, this is only Year 1 and the requirement to get promotion is MSG6 so don't overly panic as well. This is a good time for them to get used to the school programs and to learn how to be independent as well as plan out their activities and practise good time management.

Keeping an eye on the overall MSG for the 6 or 7 subjects is important, but must also remember that passing the 2 languages is required to promote to Sec 2. i heard tat for some classes, a handful of students failed the chinese test this term (so maybe 15-20 of them for the Sec 1 cohort?) and they have been put into chinese remedial lessons.

Personally I think msg may not be a good gauge for such mini tests. All these tests are between 10-30 marks, 1-2 marks already difference make a difference to the grade. Having said that, 2 is them were bring home assignments, and I believe the teacher did offer them guidance on these 2 assignments. Mine also found the chinese v v challenging.

I am thinking, given the strong chinese culture in the school, other than providing challenging work, does the school do anything differently to try and make learning chinese more interesting and less daunting to the kids? It’s actaully quite ironical to see them complete the chinese history project with all discussion and most research done using English..

Term 1 has ended on Fri, I believe all WA1 results were returned before end of term.

All results should be out before term ended last Friday.

MSG is basically averaging the grades of the core subjects. Eg. MSG of A1, A1, A2, B3, B3, C5 is (1+1+2+3+3+5)/6 = 2.5

Is it a withdrawal symptoms that most parents will face with their Kids? How did any parent overcome or is it only my daughter ?
