My DS school did not announce anything about how they will re-apportion the remaining weighted assessments. Maybe not decided yet.
Even though I am WFH and in a very busy sector, I am relieved that I don’t need to juggle supervising of HBL during May holidays. I’m grateful for the 4-week breather for me.
DS is P4, independent enough to find things to occupy his time, screen free. He has plenty of own hobbies that can be done at home, offline. Designing own games, playing music, reading books (both hard copy & free Kindle ebooks). Sometimes he will watch National Geographic kids. DH is considering loaning a TV (we don’t have one!) for them to play Wii Fit games together.
He has been trained not to disturb me when I’m busy with my work. So I will leave him to plan his own leisure activities during May hols. Anyway I’m around to monitor him. -

yup, still got WA2, just not pen and paper...actually I think easier to get through the 10% with pen and paper test rather than a weighted assignment. School says supposed to reduce stress with the changes to format of assessment, but not sure the kids think the same way :rotflmao: especially when deadlines and requirements of some of these WA2 keep on changing due to first the HBL and now the earlier school holidays...confusing for many.

A bit of schoolwork (max. 2 hrs a day) is enough to \"keep warm\". I don't like to make kids do too much schoolwork during holidays as it just makes them feel bored and resentful, and they do need a holiday. They will work much better when school starts if they are allowed to have a proper break. It doesn't mean that no schoolwork will make them lose the use of their brains; they will just be used on different things. The main thing is to control their access to mindless TV, videos or games.
P5 and Sec 1. Even library is closed. Not on the library e-borrowing system, so been buying books on kindle. But other than reading and some school work (which I hope teacher will assign), unfortunately they have not developed real passion for any hobby. Usual school holidays, we will take leave, bring them outdoor and short trips, now just confined to 4 walls. How old are your kids? The older they are, the more independent they can be. I used to face that kind of problem when we lived overseas, and I can probably come up with some suggestions.
We started having our kids on our hands a lot at that age. They are still young enough to need parents to help them plan things, especially if they aren't used to being independent, but old enough to be left to do their own stuff for a couple of hours at a stretch. If you are busy, just make it clear to them that you can spare them a few minutes during your \"coffee breaks\" and outside office hours, and will respond to emergency situations, but you need to be undisturbed during your working hours. Set up a schedule: time for schoolwork (best to do it early and get it out of the way), meal times etc, time to just watch videos and play without any particular agenda, and times when they should be doing something more \"beneficial\".
You can try out some of the ideas below. Some won't interest them at all, and that's OK. Some will interest them enough that they can do them over several days or even weeks. Just pick a couple for each day.
Some ideas:
- Reading. You can probably sign up to borrow ebooks online, no need to wait till the libraries open again. Look for recommended reading lists (lots of them online if you google) for their age groups or interests.
- Writing. You could ask them to write poems, stories, journal, comics, etc. There are lots of writing prompts and ideas online if you google. They could write a script with friends (over video call), and make puppets so they can act them out to each other.
- Crafts. Besides the obvious drawing/painting on paper, etc, what about digital art? Or sewing or photography? Or making a digital scrapbook or photobook? They could make something digital to send to their grandparents or cousins.
- Cooking . Initially, you probably need to get them to just plan independently, but only actually cook when you are free to supervise. When they gain competence, you could let them do more unsupervised.
- Nature/science. They can't go out much, but they can go out a little bit nearby. They can do a project on the plants they find, or the birds/insects they see. Get them to take photos, then research online, and write something. Look up \"kitchen table\" experiments that kids can do with common household items. Get them to research natural phenomenon. My kids were used to my telling them \"why don't you find out more?\".
- Logic/maths/word puzzles, brain teasers. You can google for these too. They could design their own puzzles and share with friends.
- Music. Play an instrument they already have at home. Learn some new songs. Write a song.
- Exercise/movement. Find some online videos that they can exercise or dance to.
- Online games with friends. My kids tell me that there are quite a lot of games to play over video calls these days. Set up \"play dates\" with other kids, but set clear time limits and rules first.
- Virtual \"trips\". There are quite a lot of videos about different places, museums etc. Or just pick a random city, and ask them to find out 5 interesting things about it, and have a show and tell session.
- Projects that combine several of the above. For eg., my daughter did a Lord of the Rings type project (medieval history, knights etc) when she was around that age. She read the books, designed a coat of arms, collected info about their castles, weapons, clothing, musical instruments, etc. I think we tried to make some cake or food (can't remember now as it's nearly 10 yrs ago).
That should be enough to start with! -

(1) If the centre has a Live online lesson package alongside a classroom one, we can sign up for that.
(2) If the centre does not have a Live online lesson package, once CBreaker ends, plus intermingling of students (from different schools) no longer disallowed, then classroom lessons will be resurrected, no more Live online replacement. But, I know that, for guardians who are still concerned, (some) centres provide an alternative option of a pre-recorded video lesson. In fact, this pre-recorded video lesson option has been in place (for these centres I inquired) since early this year, so... -

Will be dropping the non-essential tuitions. Decided after evaluation that the online tuition is just too time-consuming, energy-draining & not effective for learning. Wasting my precious money during this period when finances are tight. Anyway P4 is not a crucial year so it’s no big deal to stop now.
Heard some rumors that the school will be streaming the kids at the end of P4 year, based on Maths results only. I don’t really believe it’s true. Firstly it’s strange why use Maths results only. Secondly I thought MOE said no more streaming except for SBB into Foundation/Normal level subjects for P5-6?
