      3Boys:
Can't really see what this has to do with the gahmen.

Role of gahmen is to provide schools across the island to allow accessibility to large majority of population, and make sure that all attain a reasonable standard of instruction. Given that there are dozens of P-schools, with differing cultures and localities, it is inevitable that there will be differences in standards, and that is not something that the gahmen can or should fix.

Everything else, whether you choose to partake in PV, move house, is entirely optional and self imposed.

Its actually quite easy to be a parent in Singapore. Try being a parent in Ethiopia....
Hmmm...I thought this introduction of phase 2B and being a PV is implemented by the gahmen (most accurately MOE)? Somehow I don't see it is working very well as the nation progress..I also worry for my kids when they are due for P1 registration in a few years time.

Don't think being a parent of Ethiopia is good suggestion - it is like comparing an apple and an orange...entirely 2 different fruits.

I am mostly a silent reader. Really enjoy reading the discussions, really can't resist the itch to contribute my fustration about this whole process of P1 registration.

It's hard enough to clock up 40 hours if both parents are both working, let alone 80 hours.

I hope schools who want parents to clock up 80 hours have sufficient 'jobs' for PVs, do not take in too many PVs fighting for jobs, yet in the end can't clock up time to register under Phase 2B...that would be very heart-breaking if this happens.

Hmmmm...seems like Gahmen wants everything...Promote both parents to work to contribute to the economy. Promote to have more kids but so difficult to get into our ideal schools. AS more n more parents are better educated naturally, our standards and expectation will increase. Hence the hopes of getting our kids to 'better' school will naturally increase as compare to our parents generation.....no such thing about PV or phase 2B..What more in phase 2B, PV has to compete with church members, grassroot members, clan members...Fierce competitions... Really hope gahmen will step in and improve the situation. Also, this PV thing seems to favour more to parents who are SAHM. Hahahaa..really so hard to be parent in Singapore.

I disagree about SAHM being 'easier' to apply for PV. I applied for a sch 2 yrs ago (2008). My son's in K2 this year. They told me I'm in waiting list! In the registration form, I 'ticked' all columns as in I'm able to volunteer in all departments any time of the week. I just heard a few weeks ago that another SAHM applied in 2009. She's able to get in? I really pray that my son will get into another sch so that I don't have to rely on this 'biased' sch as I'm living within 1km of this 'biased' sch... if they're so 'biased' on PV stuff.. what about my son's EDU?

Seriously, I am glad to hear u say it is not easy for the SAHM to apply as a PV. My time has not come yet. So far I read somewhere in this forum that some mummies commented that there may be preferential selection towards SAHM wor. So that makes me worried when I read that... 😢

The PV selection process a bit black box and depends on so many things (ie whether school need this or not) so I really can’t say - except that sometimes you need alignment of various elemental forces. But point is you may have to call up and visit the school.

I (FTWM) signed up as PV in 2008 and started clocking in 2008. Start of 2009 suddenly all work stopped - there was nothing in the pipeline! Imagine my anxiety as there were still some hours to go. I called the school various times until I was able to establish why they hadn’t been calling me. Happy to say the communication gap was repaired and I managed to fulfil the hours.

But whatever the brickbats, I’m grateful that it allows parents like me (old school disappeared or not applicable) a chance at Phase 2B. I refuse to compromise on religious belief for this (heaven is watching) and I not able to do grassroots so the only other way is via PV. Else I would have to sit at home gnawing my nails becos I have absolutely no faith in luck during Phase 2C balloting.

Not really in selection of PV I find cos I am a FTWM but get selected. Just have to stress that you're willing to take annual lve, child care leave, etc etc. Sometimes in granting assignments SAHM has the advantage cos SAHM are more flexible in their timing (eg can do am/pm session traffice warden duties, wkly library duties) while FTWM has to subject to leave clearance.

The sch I PV-ed at approached me to complete last few hrs of my PV by doing 1 mth of morning traffic warden (0.5hrs each time). Quite diff cos I have to send my kids to CC & then to work. They changed my duty to a few batch of 4hrs duties so I need to take a few 1/2 days leave.

                  FRUIT FOR THOUGHT

maybe that SAHM was working in a certain industry before she became a SAHM and thus has a set of skills the school requires (eg computer programming).. or maybe she has a special skill like dancing or something which the school requires...

                  The possibilities can be many..

I am a FTWM and I was also accepted for PV. Yes, that means annual leave, childcare leave, weekends etc etc…

FTWM and SAHM alike - don’t give up. Just give it your best shot.

The trick that I learnt from KSP is to cast your net as wide as possible - pretty much like sending our application letter for a job. Apply to a few then see which one you get accepted for…

Ok, what would you propose to be a better solution? I had suggested that we do away with PV altogether, but there will be a bunch of naysayers to that to.

Ethiopia is an entirely relevant comparator, as is Malaysia, or the Phillipines, or China, or the UK. In which of those countries would you prefer to be a parent raising children, compared to Singapore?

My view again, parenting in general is a difficult endeavour, but parenting in Singapore is dead easy, compared to many other countries.

Hmmm..I would not do away with PV but rather I hope MOE will recognise the efforts being a PV in school so maybe phase2B1 for PV phase 2B2 for clans/church/grassroot. Hahahaaa...that's my wish list which may be equal to fat hope.

I don't really mean parenting in different countries but more of the education we want our kids to have in Singapore I guess.. Parenting in terms of education thinking of which 'ideal' school to put the child in. Of course parents don't have to worry about the schools in Ethopia cos they have more urgent priority which is to fill up their stomachs but it is really a different environment to discuss...which is why I say it is an orange and apple comparison. Naturally when a country get more developed, standards will be higher and hence expectations are raised as well..Singapore is a small island with limited human resource. Hence in this human rat race, almost all the parents is given the impresession that education is the key to a good future....so many parents start to invest kids to enrichment classes, reading material etc etc..all in the hopes that their kids have good/advanced start in education.
