RI or HCI

My son has his eyes set on RI but I prefer him to choose HCI for the following reasons:

1. Distance (I don't see the need to waste precious time on bus/train journeys nor do I have the financial muscle to buy a property near RI).
2. Mandarin speaking environment/strong emphasis on Chinese culture, given the rise of China and its influence in the next decades.

It was actually because of structural problems of the JC section, having nothing to do with the chinese high shcool

Just want to add in that:

RI is near MOELC if taking 3rd language.
HCI has a direct bus (156) to Bishan, unless choose to take 3rd lang at Ghim Moh.

I went through the dilemma with my boy two years ago. After some counselling by various one, my boy finally chose to go to RI.

Amony those that we had spoke to, one of them was his chinese enrichment class tutor who strong encouraged him to go HCI because my boy was strong in Chinese, she thought that HCI would be a better enviroment for him. Another person we had dicussed with was his Maths tutor who was an ex-RI teacher. Of course he asked him to opt for RI because of the RI cultur and atmosphere which he said was truly a place to groom scholar.

We had no regrets at all for making the choice. RI does offer that kind of excellence environment, be it sports or academic. The right "attitude" is just there.

Some may think that it could be very pressurzing. Well, my child is enjoying every moment of it.

The myth about RI boy only good in English but weak in Chinese is not true. The Chinese standard is actually quite high for those who opt for Higher Chinese. The boys would defintely have no problem to get A1 for ther GCE ‘O’ level exam.

So my advice is, if you boy has the "attitude" and the "ability", don’t waste it.

Does that mean that RI does not have such a stringent promotion requirement at year 4?

Before the IP was introduced and in those days when RJC was still in its infancy, HCJC was actually a top choice of many students from RGS and RI.


I guess the reason was its rich, unique culture that one will not find in other institutions. Beside grooming yourselves into scholars and excel in all your potential, I guess what many people want would be two of the most memorable years in their life (17-18 years old). I think this is the kind of intangible factors that need to be decided if two institutions are almost equally strong in every aspects.

somebody can confirm this ?[/quote]You are right, MOE requirement is just a HCL pass at year 4. But HCI's own requirement for exemption in Year 5 is at least a B4 for HCL taken in year 4. I don't know if RI follows the minimum requirement of MOE or has its own more stringent requirement.
