        (2) Don’t go swimming, especially in the sea/river.
        (3) Don’t go stepping on those offerings on walkways etc.

My mum used to tell us :

Don’t get married during this month.
Don’t buy house or do renovation or move house.
Come home early before dark if possible.
Don’t talk nonsense especially on you know what.

Don't sit on the front row when watching Gei Tai.

Don't go out at night unless necessary.
Say excuse me if you let your little kid pee on the grass (this is for emergency when no toilet around la) :siam:

Sorry about my asking, but could you guys tell me why we shouldn't do these things (am not Chinese)? Is it because these things irritate the ghosts, or something like that?

                TIA. 🙂

                  Muffins,

                  just one word: superstition.

One cannot explain the practices logically nor rationally.
                  Reasons will also differ.
If u didn't know them, the practices wouldn't bother u.
since u know them, u may become self-conscious about them

Believe this festival (of this scale) is not practiced anywhere else in d world, except Singapore.

                  U believe arnot?

and also respect for both the living and non!! 😄

generally this is not an auspicious month in chinese culture so no major event shd be held during this period.

as for the getai, it is really a show to entertain the spirit so u shd not occupy the choice seats.

for the rest, use your imagination! 😛

I am superstitious, about certainn things, to tell you the truth (oops:). But, most of the superstitious beliefs e.g. Break a mirror get 7 years bad luck, hungry ghost etc. I don't believe it....

I guess I am more on the logical side of things. I believe that all of these have a logical meaning behind them, but got twisted into the superstitions that we follow nowadays.

                      1) Break a mirror get 7 years bad luck: Other people or you could step on it, injure your feet and/or other body parts, and might need to get medical treatment, wasting money (bad luck to waste money)

                      2) Step on a crack, break your mummy's back: If you step on a crack, chances are you might fall down and injure yourself...

The only one I can't actually find an actual explanation for is the hungry ghost. mebbe they just want to give thanks to their ancestors... 🙂
