not sure if it’s really for ancestors as most of the time the offerings are burnt in common areas and not at the altars.
-
Yes, it is not for ancestors. It is meant for the wandering spirits.
As mentioned by someone earlier, it is only widely practiced in Singapore and Malaysia. The Chinese in china do not conduct prayers n getai like we do. -

Most traditions that we carry out here like praying, alters etc got wiped out during the revolution in China. The younger generation China Chinese have no idea what this is all about. But thanks to our ancestors who left China before the revolution, we are still exposed to them.. -

The Hungry Ghosts month is also practiced in Thailand. Roy Kratong is also another I think. Although I never seen getai, they do make offerings to spirits or to their ancestors.

I broke 2 taboos regarding the 7th mth.
I bought my 1st property in the middle of the lunar 7th mth. Still remember meeting the agent at the void deck of my parents' place then and there was ashes flying all over while we were signing all the documents. Though my mum does practise these taoist believes and I do help her with the rituals, I do not believe in all the superstitions.
Started the reno of the place that we are staying in during the lunar 7th mth too. DH is superstitious but also desparate to have the place ready so we can move in as soon as possible since we've already sold off our existing place and I just gave birth to DS. He consulted some fengshui fella who told us not all dates are bad during the 7th mth so he found a good day for us to dong tu. -
你相信中邪这回事吗?明珠姐妹的小明珠at 13.Aug 10主持歌台时,疑中邪在后台晕倒。依我说,鬼月凡事还是要小心为妙……恐怖~~
