It's not true that eating lots of meat will put on weight. My DS's a meat-eater, chicken, pork, deer meat, beef and lamb and salmon with rice, still don't put on weight. All because of high metabolism. Being healthy is still the most important!!

My little 2 sense think that SLEEP also play part of it.

I do believe that children have enough or good sleep do help they grow well.
Each time I chk wif the Paedi, all said the same thg. As long as she is healthy and hit her milestone, we shld not be unduly worried.

I regretted listening to my boys' PD. It does matter when they kept falling sick at least once a mth n not putting as much weight as they are eating. It all boils down to not absorbing the nutrients or digestive sys not working well. Now we are doing nursing back to proper health.

Really? How are you making them gain weight? Any medicine?

I now remember my cousin taking some medicine to kill worms in the tummy. She was really skinny last time and started to put on weight after the bout of medication. Wonder if I should get my son to see the doc.
Still working on this via TCM.

Does your child experience constipation regularly? Mine did when they were toddlers. Stupid of me not to link constipation n weak digestive sys then despite regular water intake n consumption of fruits n veg n seldom consumption of heaty food/deep fried items.

Hmmm...I guess some elderly folks tend to equate eating meat with putting on weight but that apart, kids I know who are both skinny & underweight are usually the ones who don't normally consume a lot of meat and have a smaller than usual appetite. By smaller appetite I mean they eat smaller/lesser portion than what their normal diet intake should be. Of course metabolism may be one of the major reasons as well...

I'm not hoping DS to be big and tall like other kids. He can look skinny for all I care but I just hope that he at least maintain a 'healthy' weight, and not be 'underweight' šŸ˜ž

mrswongtuition:

My boy is considered skinny (takes after me) but he's very tall for his age. At one point, we faced the same problem - poor appetite and very fussy about food.

Now, his appetite is super huge and it's so scary to watch him eat (and only put on that little bit of extra weight - but at least he's not that skinny).

Things we did:
1. Gave him some chinese herbs to stimulate appetite (there are ready made powders but I preferred to choose the herbs ourselves and blend them at home - quality control). Since it's in powder form, we gave him 1/4 tsp daily, mixed into his milk. Ever since then, his appetite increased tremendously.
2. Stock up on their fave foods. My boy loves certain brands of biscuits/snacks and we simply made sure there's amply supply at home. He's allowed to snack as and when he likes as long as he's able to finish his proper meals.
3. Introduce different types of foods. I was very strict about his food before he turned 3yo (no junk food). Now that he's older, I allow certain 'junk foods'. His current fave - CHEESEBURGER. I will give it to him if he has been a good boy. Amazingly, he can finish 1 whole burger on his own after his dinner and milk.
4. Constantly offer him food. I realise that my boy won't eat when he is 'busy'. We have to keep offering him food. \"Do you want to eat watermelon?\" \"You want some biscuits?\"
5. Give him a hearty breakfast. I know for some kids that go to CCC, they have their breakfast there. For my boy, even when he was attending CCC, we made him have breakfast at home. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I want to make sure he really puts food into his mouth. My boy's current fave for breakfast - Peanut Butter with bread/crackers.
6. Gave him supplements to prevent him from failing sick (once they fall sick, they lose weight very fast and it's very hard to pile back the weight!)
More details about the supplements I give here: http://thelittleonesinmylife.blogspot.com

Hope this is useful šŸ™‚

Hi, mrswongtuition, may I know what sort of chinese herbs did you give to your DS to stimulate his appetite?

MTIA šŸ˜„

It's \"si sen\" but we added cordyceps to help improve digestion/absorption of nutrients as advised by the uncle we often buy herbs from.

However, I did not buy those ready packs as you never know what they put inside. My mum went with me to personally pick the herbs. I washed & dried them in my food dehydrator before blending into powder.

A few mummies I know from the forum also tried and their kids' appetite really increased alot too šŸ™‚

That's right, I won't be concerned about my DS's weight at all if he has a good appetite and is eating well. How to get the required nutrients when he doesn't even want to eat? Fortunately, he sleeps well.

Orh... \"si sen\"! I trust EYS, will buy a can tomorrow! Really hope it works on my boy! Thanks mrswong!

wa, your boy really eats \"ho liao\", cordyceps are SOOOOO expensive these days! So for the other few mummies that tried, was it also si sen + cordyceps or just si sen?

Hi, mrswongtuition

:thankyou: You're lucky to have a mum who knows something about herbs too šŸ˜„

Some of the other mummies tried 'si sen' without cordyceps as they find it too exp. It worked for them too - they saw an increase in appetite. Those who gave cordyceps (either brew in soup or blend with the powder) saw a faster weight gain like my boy. He was only 11 - 12kg when he was 2.5yo. Now (3.5yo), he's almost 15kg. Gained alot within a short period of time. And it's not SIDEWAYS, it's proportionate growth.

I initially found the cordyceps expensive and did not want to buy it. My mum found out and she paid for it. She bought the super expensive one. $600+++ for 2 small bundles. Each bundle had around 15 pieces. I used 5 pieces of blending into the powder. The rest I kept it to brew into soup.

My boy loves soup, as long as the herbal soup is tasty (add more pork or chicken bones and scallop), he will slurp it up!

But you really pay for what you get. When we use the cordyceps my mum bought, 1 small piece in a big pot of soup and we can taste and feel the difference already. Last time I buy those cheaper ones, no taste one!

Forgot to add:
The powder I blended yeilded around 500g of powder. That 500g last us until now - have not finished. We keep in air tight container in the fridge. So don't buy too much if you only want to 'try try'.

I also remembered: There's a shop in Tampines Mart Level 1 (chinese medical shop) that sells this mixture (si sen with cordyceps) in powder form. They sell in 60g bottles. Can't remember the price though. If you stay near there, can go check it out. šŸ™‚
