Self tutor or Outsource??
-
This is a timely discussion as I have been revising with my P2 girl Eng/Math/Chinese for her year end exam and seriously thinking of outsourcing. Currently she goes for Chinese enrichment once a week so rest of the time I try to help her as much as I can even though I am working full time.
It's very tiring and I think this translates in me being quite impatient and annoyed with her at times when she is distracted and not focused. She is a bright girl but she tends to be careless in her work and doesn't read the questions properly. So always losing precious marks for her tests.
I feel that outsourcing to tutors may be the key to preserving the parent-child relationship - realised that there is increasing tension between us especially near exam time. Also, being full time working mum is just too tiring la - the 2-3 hrs that I am with my kids daily should not be spent just on revising work alone. Once I get home its rush rush rush .... cause they have to go to bed pretty early (morning session).
And I have a hubby who is happy to just leave all the work to me ... only stepping in when :?: or when he sees I am at wits end

It's very annoying when the child does his/her work in slip-shod manner. My son doesn't read questions properly...instead of ascending order, he replies in descending order :x missing characters or else leaves out vital phrases when doing open-ended comprehension. It's very tiring and I think this translates in me being quite impatient and annoyed with her at times when she is distracted and not focused. I outsourced Chinese since K2, but follow up closely too.
It's a very tiring job but it has to be done. But for FTWM, it's extremely exhausting. -
I think the Tripartite-effort is important - Parents-Tutors-Teachers ( as in the school teacher)
Even with outsourcing, if parents do not monitor or follow up on the enrichment/tuition classes .. it would be a waste of effort.
So Teacher Teaches .. Tutors Enriches .. Parents Monitors .. :celebrate: -

Couldn't agree more. Parents must take active involvement in children's studies.I think the Tripartite-effort is important - Parents-Tutors-Teachers ( as in the school teacher)

Wow.... ur children are so lucky to have you as their \"tutor\".
I prefer to outsource during preschool years. Once they acquired the necessary foundation - can read can multiply, I take over. Although I still send them for enrichments, it's more to enrich & stimulate rather than tuition. No tuition for them since they already have me as their designated full time tutor

All things boils down to the attitude of that person, and the influence they had from those around/close to him/her.
Actually, for a tutor to be able to produce results, he/she has to not only teach the content & exam techniques but also motivate the kids to do well.
Learning attitude is more important than ability. Once they believe that they can do it & want to do it, they will.
Parenting is really a trial and error path....

One of the reasons why I quit my job and become a SAHM is because I wanna self tutor my 2 kids. By Self tutoring, I am able to understand the strength and weakness of my children as well as their learning pattern. #1 is slow, but not stupid, sheโs just lacking the confidence and being being a visual learner, I have to draw/write out my explanation before she can understand. #2 is a fast learner, but very very careless and sometimes too complacent. As they are very different learners, I have learnt to work with them differently.
After spending 2 years with them, I have decided to outsource some of the teaching to tuition center. As I have a new baby to look after, I find it quite difficult to monitor and coach them closely like what I did in the past. Another reason is that I am finding myself losing patience easily.
So far, I only sent my #1 to English tuition. When she goes P3 next year, I will send her to Maths tuition as well, I doubt I can handle Maths and Science together. As for #2, she is coping fine except for her Chinese. But I am not too concerned at this stage as she has told me she likes Chinese even though she is weak at it. I guess there is still hope as long as she is still keen in that subject. I am more concerned abt her Maths. For some reasons, she dislikes Maths, even though she can score well. -
My friend who is a psychiatrist and life coach says:" No one takes a greater interest in your child more so than yourself."
She has 3 children, 2 DDs and a new baby DS, her DDs are both autistic and she tutors them herself.
I think this is because she knows their personalities best and also because they proved to be a challenge for "regular tutors".
