I prefer to outsource during preschool years. Once they acquired the necessary foundation - can read can multiply, I take over. Although I still send them for enrichments, it's more to enrich & stimulate rather than tuition. No tuition for them since they already have me as their designated full time tutor 😉
Wow.... ur children are so lucky to have you as their \"tutor\".

Actually, for a tutor to be able to produce results, he/she has to not only teach the content & exam techniques but also motivate the kids to do well.
Learning attitude is more important than ability. Once they believe that they can do it & want to do it, they will.
All things boils down to the attitude of that person, and the influence they had from those around/close to him/her.

Parenting is really a trial and error path.... 🙏

One of the reasons why I quit my job and become a SAHM is because I wanna self tutor my 2 kids. By Self tutoring, I am able to understand the strength and weakness of my children as well as their learning pattern. #1 is slow, but not stupid, she’s just lacking the confidence and being being a visual learner, I have to draw/write out my explanation before she can understand. #2 is a fast learner, but very very careless and sometimes too complacent. As they are very different learners, I have learnt to work with them differently.

After spending 2 years with them, I have decided to outsource some of the teaching to tuition center. As I have a new baby to look after, I find it quite difficult to monitor and coach them closely like what I did in the past. Another reason is that I am finding myself losing patience easily.

So far, I only sent my #1 to English tuition. When she goes P3 next year, I will send her to Maths tuition as well, I doubt I can handle Maths and Science together. As for #2, she is coping fine except for her Chinese. But I am not too concerned at this stage as she has told me she likes Chinese even though she is weak at it. I guess there is still hope as long as she is still keen in that subject. I am more concerned abt her Maths. For some reasons, she dislikes Maths, even though she can score well.

My friend who is a psychiatrist and life coach says:" No one takes a greater interest in your child more so than yourself."

She has 3 children, 2 DDs and a new baby DS, her DDs are both autistic and she tutors them herself.

I think this is because she knows their personalities best and also because they proved to be a challenge for "regular tutors".

I think the Tripartite-effort is important - Parents-Tutors-Teachers ( as in the school teacher)

Even with outsourcing, if parents do not monitor or follow up on the enrichment/tuition classes .. it would be a waste of effort.

So Teacher Teaches .. Tutors Enriches .. Parents Monitors .. :celebrate:

Couldn't agree more. Parents must take active involvement in children's studies.

May I add ... parents as in both Dad and Mom.
Many daddies do the ferrying and mummy the monitoring.
Actually, it can be quite fruitful for parents to do this together.

During ferrying/waiting for their classes to end, parents can take the opportunity to spent time together.
For monitoring, it can be quite a wonderful experience to see your children learns and you will discover how unique they are.

I understand sometimes they drive us up the wall when we are monitoring/teaching them ... but weighing that over the pleasure to be involved in their growing up process .. it might be worthwhile.

                    Trapwithin,

Self tutor is a very satisfying job.
I coach kids in subjects which I’m more confident and get hubby to do the ones I’m weak in. We know what he is weak/strong in. Yes, we get driven up the wall bcos as parents we are very concerned.

My 2 kids are poles apart…maybe bcos one is a girl who tends to be more driven while son is bochap. But then again, not every boy is like mine. My psychiatrist told me girls tend to 要面子, so they will want to strive and have inner motivation. As for some boys, they mature much later.

Janet, good to hear that both of you are involved.

For me I have only 1 child. So do not have another child to compare their personality. But I heard boy tends to pick up quickly in Upper Pri … after they "settle down".

For coaching, recently I was inspired by Tamarind’s article on teaching Chinese and started to pick up reading Chinese with my dd again.

It was tough at first but yet very fulfilling teaching my girl to embrace Chinese reading. Though we do coaching and montinoring, we still send her for enrichment classes, because group dynamics learning and some of the centre’s rich cirruculum.

Any parents can share stories of children (your own or those that you know) who did well in PSLE without tuition/enrichment?

I have a nagging feeling that majority of those who did well has the advantage of external coaching other than school’s and own hardwork.
