All Parents of 2009 PSLE kid: Preparing from Sec2 Streaming

This must be case of SEC2 year end... We are Sec1 parents pondering over what lies ahead... So tell us more ... What criteria school has in allocating subject combination... I am sure they need to get class size right, so you cannot get choices you want.. how they prefer one over another ... Results?


I seriously want to ask parents, if bend is towards humanity & no wish to do engineering... Should we drop Physics & A- maths while choosing subject for sec 3

Yes, sch would look at yr results when deciding if they would let u have yr choice subject combi. From mu understanding on dd's school, the students have to give the school two options of combi. Before that, based on their results teachers would briefly let them know if they are eligible. Eg. Based on sciences reasults to decide if u r eligible to take 3 sciences. For 3 sci, 1 is elective. And eg if yr history result is not good, they would discourage you to choose history. I guess different schools have different practise. U have to find out from yr child's school.

In dd's sch, Chem, E & A maths are compulsory. They can choose double humanities with the basic mandatory chem & 2 maths.

Thank you. Mainly it is about Science ( Triple science or Combined science are two extrems) & Geo over History. Looks like A & E maths are mandatory for most schools...

how is she doing there?? think shd be fine and happy ........

i took Add maths during my time there, but can't remember was it mandatory for all classes......

Yes. she is happy.Enjoying CCA as well. Spech & Drama.

School is great.. Can't ask for more. She got to L1R5 of 10 for whole year... though SA1 was bit high.

I can see , she is growing into a confident person.. sometime challanges us too , but that is ok...as long as it is for reason...

You are ex-Crescentarian... so it must have been great feeling that school continues to churn responsible young ladies year after year!

It seems that some are still unsure of A-Level/IB subject combination requirements. Many schs made it a requirement for all students to take A Maths at least till sec 3 due to the following reasons:

1. Contrasting subject requirement both A-level/IB.
2. A pass in A maths at O-level is a mandatory requirement for entry to all unis’ business schools, economics, architecture studies etc.
3. For top humanities students H2 Maths is compulsory.
4. Very Few JCs allow students without A-Maths to take H2 Maths. Exen if students are allowed to take at this level due to passing of an entrance exam, generally their results are very dissapointing.
5. At JC-1, an A-Maths student in the arts stream can offer to take maths at H1 level. Its like a revision for him.

Er.....r, dadofgirl, i am puzzle with yr words
both of our girls had taken PSLE in 2009 and they're now in sec schs.
u can't remember that we had exchanged some conversations last year and i even encouraged u to go for Crescent Girls after released of PSLE results.....??
