      Nourishing Chinese Soup (止咳润肺汤)

      Serves 4

      Ingredients
10 - 15 grams* each of the following Chinese herbs
      *(amount each about 1 tablespoon):

Fritillaria Bulbs “Chuan Bei Mu” (川贝母)
      Glehniae Root “Sha Shen” (沙参)
Solomon's Seal Rhizome “Yu Zhu” (玉竹)
      Liquorice Root \"Gan Cao\" (甘草)
Sweet Almond/ Southern Almond “Nan Xing” (南杏)
Bitter Almond/ Northern Almond or Chinese Almond “Bei Xing” (北杏)

1 teaspoon of Fructus Lycii aka Wolfberry “Gou Qi Zi” (枸杞子)

1 small Dried (Sugar Coated) Tangerine “Gan Ju Bing” (干桔饼)
8 – 10 Dried Figs “Wu Hua Guo” (无花果)
If you are unable to find dried tangerine, replace with 2-3 honey dates (蜜枣).

1 pot of water, 50% filled (about 800ml)

      Optional:
200 grams of lean pork meat or ribs or lung, blanched
      Pinch of salt to taste
If adding meat to the soup, you may wish to reduce the dried tangerine to half a piece instead, depending on how sweet you want the soup to taste.

      Method:

      1. Boil soup in slow cooker:

Add water, blanched lean meat/ ribs (if desired) and all ingredients into pot. Then, place pot back to its slow cooker.
Turn into auto shift mode and simmer for a few hours, or keep simmering from morning before work, till evening after work.
Add salt (if desired) before serving.

      2. Boil soup on stove:

Heat a pot of water over high fire.
When boiled, reduce heat to low fire.
Add blanch lean meat/ ribs (if desired) and all ingredients into the pot. Simmer for 2 - 3 hours.
Add salt (if desired) before serving.

And do you give eggs or fish when they are coughing?? HEard that some fish can cause phelgm. What food to avoid too??

        Thanks
川贝母 Fritillaria is a bulbous flowering plant often used in Chinese medicine to treat coughs or other lung conditions. According to traditional Chinese medicine, this compound is \"cooling\" and affects the \"heart and lung meridians.\" It is typically used to moisten dry mucous membranes, loosen phlegm, and suppress coughing.

Research conducted in China has shown that compounds in fritillaria (including verticine, verticinone, imperialine and thymidine) help inhibit the contraction of bronchial smooth muscle and decrease mucus secretion. The unprocessed bulb is poisonous, although commercially available bulbs are usually processed.

My 21 month old toddler girl is having phlegm and cough and running nose. Her body always feel warm/hot to touch but ear thermometer always show 36.9 deg celcius or highest is 37.3 deg celcius. I still give her paracetamol suspension.

Visited GP and was prescribed some medicines for phlegm, cough and running nose. 2 days already her phlegm and cough don’t seem to get better. At night when sleeping she would cough till she wakes up and lots of phlegm in her throat.

Supplements that I am giving her all long are cod liver oil and colostrum powder. Since she falls sick, I also give her Vitamin C supplement.

Can I give her sambucol in this instance? will it help? but will that be too much supplements for her to take since she has yet to reach 2 yrs old?

Can I still give her the above supplements while she is also taking western medicines?

Any food or fruits to avoid? and what food is good for her at this moment. pls advise… thanks!!

Hi nanana, I don't think sambucol is recommended for children under 3. Your DD (who is lovely, looking at her pic 🙂 is taking quite a number of supplements as it is. My best advice is to bring her to her pd to get better advice.

As for food and fruits, I guess the general rule of thumb is nothing cold or too sweet. Some fruits that are too sweet may further irritate her throat, although taking fruits are good for children.

You can also consider bringing her to a Chinese sinseh (TCM) instead?

Thanks, I just brought her to the PD today as this morning her cough seems to get worse and the running nose too.

Hope she gets well soon. Btw, she got sick after started childcare for 1 week 😞

                      Yalah.
                      That's fairly common.
Remind your DD to wash her hands more often when she's at the CC.
Get her to wash her hands and feet when she gets home from the CC.
Being sick is no fun for both child and parents.
But it's a good way to build up her immunity.

I hope your DD feels better soon 🙏

My DS (9mths) cough + phlegm want to register PR on him, but I have been rejecting the application. haha… It has been there for 1 mth… on and off… getting better and then worst again. Visiting PD for so many times and pocket is already 1 big hole.

Childcare plays a part and weather too. I also placed him at Infant care for 3 weeks liao and now he is still coughing with phlegm.

I have given him some powder from EYS for dry stubborn cough with phlegm. It seem abit better but will still giving him the phlegm medication 1-2 hrs apart.

For kids, it is very difficult for them to recover from phlegm coz they dont know how to cough it out. They will swollow it back lor.
