hopefully, they turn over a new leaf after seeing strong deterrent sentences passed on their buddies. Is there a law against being secret societies member? Or how is the police gonna proof it? Else I think only lim kopi with police and scot-free... till they get caught for another hacking incident.
Similarly, all those loanshark activities shld be related to these secret societies... and police also can't do much with the paint splashing...
Wonder what entice the kids to join SS nowadays... given that some of these kids are from well-to-do families as well. -

IMHO, these kids are just being naive and easily drawn to gangs due to a hunger for recognition. Most of them I'm sure seek attention and even love. They feel cool to be part of a group, doing things that show that they are macho and brave. They are very impressionable and what they don't learn at home, they learn outside. Most parents don't have time or energy to monitor their kids while others just simply don't care. Some think that as long as their children are given what they want, they should be fine. Parents do play a very important role in nurturing their kids. As most parents are affluent and have the \"what I didn't have I make sure my kids have\" mentality, kids turned out pampered and spoilt. How a kid turns out, I would say, at least 90% of the responsibility lies on the parents. Seriously, how many parents can say what their children are up to anytime of the day? When something as serious as this happens especially if it happens to our own kids, then we start to question why, which is of course too late in the case of Darren Ng. For the innocent victims, they suffer due to the degradation of the society they live in. :torchme:Is there a law against being secret societies member? Or how is the police gonna proof it? Else I think only lim kopi with police and scot-free... till they get caught for another hacking incident.

\"Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.\" Proverbs 22:6
\"Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;
They shall not be ashamed,
But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.\"
Psalm 127:3 - 5
Where an arrow lands, is where the parent 'shoots' it.
Sorry for preaching but very relevant Biblical truths. Anyway, the BIBLE stands for \"Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth\"

:? :? :? -
I dun think Darren was part of the secret society. One website said that his friend was in jail, and they recognised Darren from the last time he was with that friend. So, they started staring at him and mumbling about his friend. Darren got irked a bit, and stared back. Then, that whole \"confrontation\" thing...
Seriously, men are a bit weird. Whenever they feel like anybody is eating into their own \"territory:\" or trying to size them up, they think that if they can just nonchalantly say something offensive/retaliate in a fashion, that the people would back off. Lemme relate to you a personal experience:
My uncle, whom I have known for all my life, was once walking down a road at night, getting back to his house. He noticed that some guy was staring at him. He started to stare back. That guy started walking towards him. And it went down like this:
Guy: Eh, what you staring at? Wanna fight ah? (Reaches into pocket)
Uncle: (Thinking, thinking, http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/skype-emoticons.html) No lah, you see, I thought you were my friend, you look a lot like him. Aiyoh, sorry for confusion...
Guy: Aiyoh leh, why don't you just say so leh, ok ah, see you (waves hand). -

THE apparent gang involvement behind the Bukit Panjang slashings and the Oct 30 murder of 19-year-old Darren Ng has raised concern among MPs.
Mr Alvin Yeo, chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Law, intends to raise the issue of gangs in the next parliamentary sitting, to be held later this month.
He said: 'Two such incidents have happened, so close to each other and with serious consequences. We will try and get a sense of how the authorities view the situation, how widespread the problem is, what measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring the problem under control.'
He added that several MPs will also be raising parliamentary questions on the issue of gangs in the upcoming sitting. -

Who's beating who? My friend living in bukit panjang used to complain about the noise level of the 24hr coffee shop opposite his block. But for this week he said it's dead quiet. -

POLICE on Friday warned youth offenders involved in violent crimes that they will not be treated lightly simply because of their age, and vowed to deal with all gang behavior 'firmly and decisively'.
They will not hesitate to use the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act if necessary, said a police statement in response to a recent spate of gang attacks and rioting, sparking calls from the public for stronger police action.
Police said they conduct regular enforcement rounds on the ground to flush out out gang activities. Once detected, the Secret Societies Branch would step in to investigate the extent of gang involvement by each member.
In the recent cases, a Republic a Republic Polytechnic student was fatally slashed in Downtown East on Oct 30. Five youths have been charged with the murder of Darren Ng, 19. Nineteen youths who turned up in court to support the fifth suspect also ended up being arrested on Wednesday.
On Monday evening, a 20-year-old youth was slashed by a group armed with parangs and choppers at Block 418, Fajar Road. The group is believed to have also attacked six teenage boys at Block 505, Jelapang Road. Twelve suspects have been arrested over the two attacks.
Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam told reporters at a news briefing on Friday that these attacks were not 'completely random'.
Following these incidents, police have picked up 40 suspects in an island-wide blitz and will continue to target gang-related activity in the coming weeks.
'Police will deal with all gang behaviour firmly and decisively,' said a police statement on Friday.
Police are also using preventing and proactive strategies to deal with street gangs, including giving talks to secondary school students and other rehabilitative programmes.
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_602448.html
Gangs recruit teens in Bukit Panjang
By Shawn Lee Miller, Multimedia Journalist
GANG members have been recruiting fresh blood into their ranks outside school premises.
This was revealed in a police briefing on Friday.
RazorTV asked residents of Bukit Panjang, where two armed attacks occurred on Monday, if they noticed gangs in the schools.
Some said they have seen or heard of gangs recruiting outside secondary schools in the neighbourhood.
Mr Alex Lim, a former gang member and now a youth mentor, said that gangs usually recruit people from secondary schools, video game arcades, void decks or shopping centres.
-
\"Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said the islandwide sweep will continue over the next few weeks.
He added that the police will not hesitate to use the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act if necessary.
The Act allows suspected criminals to be detained without trial and is used largely in cases relating to secret societies, drug trafficking and loan-sharking.
Mr Shanmugam said the Act is a powerful tool for the police, adding that \"along with great power, comes great responsibility\"....\"
