My nephew is currently in Hci year 5, and he says that it is easier to be promoted to junior college from RGS and RI then Nanyang or any other schools! RGS girls will automatically be transferred to RJC unless they do not meet very very basic requirements, like getting a pass or fulfilling their minimum CCA attendence. Yep, that's it. Hoped this helped!

Oh my gosh - why is that so? So even the ones that are just average or below average get a FREE PASS from RGS and RI to get into RJC! The standards must be low so they depend on the few good local students and loads of foreign students to do well at A levels! What a SHAME!

It is heartening to hear that NYGH and HCI take it seriously and ensures that their students meet the high requirements of HIJC before admitting them in!

Please substantiate your comments. It is irresponsible to pass judgemental comments and sweeping statements like yours if you do not have the facts.
Agreed. If you required statistics and facts on RI 'A' level or the entire institute performance, you can download the report from http://www.ri.edu.sg/main/bookshelf. Can someone provide the same information for HCI? We can then understand the strength and culture better.

Well i was in RI from 1996 to 2000 (that was the pre-IP days) and to say it was competitive would be a huge understatement. The impression i get from my students now is that its still the same except there is no longer a mad rush in sec 4 to gear up for the 'O' Levels. Its essentially a 5 year long break after the PSLE to really get to explore and learn more about what interests you the most. And then its onto the 'A' Levels which no one has problems ace-ing.

This term was commonly repeated during my Rafflesian days \"We're all Big Fish in a Small Pond\". I guess it gives an idea of how competitive an environment it can get when you put a bunch of kids with big intellects and huge egos together for a few years.

I'll go for RI anytime, if for no reason other than the fact that I was there myself.

In fact, my DD is in RGS, so yeah, it feels good to know that it runs in the family. 😄

                  Definitely RI.

                  1. Raffles Institution is Singapore’s only member of the G20 Schools Group, which represents 20 of the most elite high schools in the world

                  2. "Gateway to the Ivy League" - An article in The Wall Street Journal in 2004 identified then RI (Junior College) as the "Gateway to the Ivy League", the high school outside the USA that sent the most students to elite American colleges, topping the rate of many elite prep schools in America

                  3. A recent Wall Street Journal survey of high schools that feed elite U.S. colleges shows that Raffles sent more students to 10 elite colleges than any other international school and topped such prestigious U.S. secondary schools as Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn., and Harvard-Westlake, in North Hollywood, Calif

                  4. Raffles Institution’s prestige is known internationally, and has produced most of the top politicians and academics in Singapore. Rafflesians form about 50% of NUS’ medicine and law students

                  5. RI has produced 80 President’s Scholars to date, a record amongst all schools nationally. With her 80th President’s Scholar (Ms Sharon Tan Xin Hui), RI has also produced the first female Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholar (SAFOS)

                  6. Each year, hundreds of Rafflesians bag scholarships to top universities in the United States and United Kingdom, including many to the Ivy League and Oxbridge equivalent universities[9].

RI(JC) consistently produces significant numbers of President’s Scholars, Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Scholars, Singapore Police Force (SPF) Scholars and Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholars annually.

Are u a student there or planning to go there?

                      Very impressive record. :salute:

However, every school has its top and bottom cohort. What about the kids in bottom of the cohort? Are they as motivated, and do they feel very pressurized in there?

KOH Mingming - the top student across Singapore - scored nine distinctions at 13 AUs. She was part of Hwa Chong's bi-cultural studies programme and is effectively trilingual (English, Chinese and French). She now has a place at Harvard and Yale.

Hwa Chong Institution produced a record 94 perfect scorers for the 2010 A-level Examinations, the best results in four years.

It did exceedingly well in the Humanities, Mathematics and Sciences.

More than 60 students scored eight distinctions and better. For the fourth year running, Hwa Chong had more than 200 students score seven distinctions and better.

Over six in 10 Hwa Chong students scored 3H2 distinctions and better, making them eligible for admission to any top university worldwide.

In addition, two students were awarded the Gold Medal of Excellence in Physics, presented by the Institute of Physics to top A-level Physics candidates.
