The RV and HCI top scorers have 9 distictions with A1 in HMT while the three from RI and 1 from TJ has A2 for HMT. That is why we see some reports yesterday that this year top are from HCI and RV.

RV has 4H2, 2H1, 2H3 & HMT and IPS Gold Medal. HCI has 4H2, 3H1, 1H3 & HMT. Isn't RV top since has more H3 and IPS Gold Medal?

A-Level results better than before but who is Singapore's top scorer? by Evelyn Choo 05:56 AM Mar 05, 2011 TODAY

SINGAPORE - On a day when records were broken, there was also some confusion as the A Levels results were released on Friday.

Collectively, last year's batch of students outshone their predecessors a year earlier: About 91 per cent passed in at least three H2 subjects and in General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry - the first time the figure has crossed 90 per cent since the curriculum was revised in 2006, according to the Ministry of Education (MOE). In 2009, it was about 88 per cent.

But it was less straightforward when it came to who the top student was. Traditionally, MOE does not name the top students for the A Levels.

In a press release, Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) cited its student Koh Mingming, 19, as \"the top student in the nation\". Mingming scored nine distinctions at 13 academic units. HCI added that it produced 94 perfect scorers - the school's best results in four years.

According to HCI, Mingming, who speaks English, Chinese and French, has a place at Harvard and Yale and was part of Hwa Chong's bi-cultural studies programme.

And as media reports on Friday in The Straits Times online, Zaobao.com and Channel NewsAsia highlighted the HCI student's achievements, a student from River Valley High School (RVHS) - according to a teacher from the school - had claims to the top honours as well.

RVHS student Tan Zhi Xiang also scored nine distinctions at 13 academic units. He took two H3 subjects - one more than Ming Ming had reportedly offered.

Zhi Xiang, who was part of RVHS' pioneer batch of Integrated Programme students, said: \"We were under a tremendous amount of stress, and we had to work very hard because we knew that our school's reputation depended on our batch and how we performed. So I'm really happy our batch did really well.\"

Looks like HCI's trying to claim top scorer. Good that RV's coming out to claim the title back. 😄

Did u all watch the news last night? That boy was on TV. 😄

Just not long ago, someone told me, RV is a good sec sch but might not be a good JC bec their JC level teachers are still not to the mark. I do hope this sentence is not true.
There are definitely good A level trs there because many of them have taught in other JCs and are great, experienced trs. Some of my ex-colleagues are there so i know for sure, 🙂

Yes. I watched the news. Both English and Chinese.

I am wary with this kind of unsubstantiated remarks. How do they know the teachers are \"still not up to mark\"? Do they assume that all the teachers send to a new school will necessarily be new teachers? Don't they know that MOE can transfer teachers from one schools to another? Moreover, RV starts its IP right from sec 1, from what I read, all the JC teachers have arrived at the schools to start their preparation way before ( i read one year) the students are promoting to J1. the preparation work organised by the former principal Ms Ek and the staffs were excellent.

Heard from the P that RV got to interview their own teachers.

WeiHan, do you know which overseas University model did RV use as a guideline for their A level teaching ? Read it somewhere but couldn't find that article now.

I like the fact that the schools need to interview their own teachers. Then they cannot blame MOE for sending bad teachers to their schools.

I am not sure there is a difference for A level. But RV's IP ASK is modeled after Harvard. I don't know what that means but I read all teachers have to learn and familiarised themselves with that mode of enquiring and applying knowledge.
