:stupid: I have no time to do gate duties...
When I went for their PV talk 2 years ago, they were saying the importance of doing gate duties (if it's so important as they emphasis, why arrange for PV and not security guards to do?). Now 2 years later, they are still talking about gate duties! Wonder why the \"obsession\" over this gate duties on their side :lol:Qiqi1040:
engp9337 & bzmum22,
I agreed with what you have said. The vice principal that i met basically dun care about what kind of parent i am and what is my strength that i can contribute to the school. They are just looking for free labour to be a gate keeper. The vice principal keep mentioning of their need to get gate keeper. To be frank, the school didn't leave me with good impression. Now, I have hesitation to put my girl in the school...
I wondering whether Rulang's interviewers do the same thing or not? Anyone succeed in getting Rulang's PV?
And I think given a span of 12 months, there should be ample duties (sports day, outings etc) for PV to do rather than merely gate duties. -
I have done my 40 hrs of PV in West Grove, helping out during recess time. Currently, I have signed up to be in the Parent Support Group and is helping out with the Buddy Reading Programme and some adhoc duties. From my experience with the school, I have found that the school has placed the well being of the children as utmost important.
In view of this, gate duty (as some might find rather mandane, judging from the post in this forum) whereby the PV helps to supervise the children as they wait for their parents to fetch them, is probably one of the duties that the school felt essential to ensure safety and order duing the school dismissal time. As a parent, Iβm glad that there are gate keepers around as my child will not be left alone in case I am late in fetching him. Thus do not underestimate the duty of the gate keeper.
My take is that if you intend to do PV, you need to have an open mind and be committed to what you have signed up for. Remember it is voluntary, ie. you are doing it out of your own will for the benefit of others, without expecting any return. Of course, in this case, you are likely to get a placement for your kid in this school, as a tangible benefit of volunteering. -
Gate duties are v impt 'cos the school compound is small. There are cars and big school buses moving into the school compound. And there are a lot of kids trying to cross over to the school building. Kids, being kids, they will dash across roads without checking.
Also when it rains, kids need to be ferried to the main school building if they don't carry umbrellas and there will be even more kids trying to dash across
. In fact, when it rains, the VPs will actually come out of their offices with umbrellas to help ferry the kids or direct traffic
.
The school has 3 gates, so will need parents to be stationed at each gate to ensure safety of all kids getting into the school. They have security guards but guess the school thinks that they need extra pairs of eyes 'cos the kids come from everywhere.
Performing gate duties dun need a lot of time....current practice is only half a hour once a week for the entire 1 yr PV period. -

I think it is good that they don't make it compulsory. I notice that a lot of children have enrichment classes outside school and that already takes up some time. So it is a matter of whether the student has the time and interest in the CCAs offered in the school. I am not against CCA, in fact I think it can help the child learn teambuilding, discipline, organisation skill as well as getting to know friends who share the same interest. If the timing is right and the CCA is of interest to my son, I will not hesitate to let him sign up for it.I heard from the principal this morning, that CCAs are NOT compulsory in West Grove. If our kids are taking swimming lessons, then we can actually inform the school, so they don't need to take another CCA !
What do you parents think about this ? -
tamarind, you were there yday also??? I was there too.
