Preparing kids for P5 in 2011
-
I'll start....no quote
But eeeehhh, can tell me VS =?? Open house 28May....maybe I should try to visit if not too far
-
cwc, VS is Victoria School. It is Spore’s 2nd govt sec sch, with a 135 yr history. It’s located at Siglap Link ( near Marine Parade).
Err, your profile states Jurong West, may be a tad too far for you? Son does have classmates residing in Woodlands thou. -
Hi QuiteKSMum
VS school should be within the top 20 secondary school and the COD will be raised again this year since the intake for 2012 students will be on 6 years IP program.
Just my 2 cents thought -
VS is all boys school…
My Dad’s an old boy and my nephew is there now.
How about a girls or co-ed school in the East? -
Hi QuiteKSMum,
thanks for the info, VS Gooooood Sch leh :). But yes, kinda far.... I used to wonder which good Sec Sch are there in the West within 'reach'. Tho there are NanHua, NUS etc, those are likely out of reach. Seems like west area, many in 180-230. Now that RV shifted here, have been telling my 2 kids, pls aim for RV....but better have back up plan for other Sch just in case :). Any mommy in the west got recommendation? -
Hi Peony,
I don’t have a girl but if I had one, I would definitely consider TKGS (Tanjong Katong Girls’ Sch) as one of my choices. This time I must admit I’m somewhat bias as the sch is my alma mater.
But looking at the sch academic achievements, it still impresses me. COP is ard 234, but the school managed to be either a band 1 or 2 sec school consistently. You prob need to study in greater details ( I didn’t follow that closely).
For what it’s worth, these were the other schools we had in mind ( bearing in mind we stay in the East):
1. Catholic High
2. St Joseph’s Institution
3. Tanjong Katong Sec
4. Chung Cheng High
5. Anglican High
6. Nan Chiau High
7. Temasek Sec
8. Ngee Ann Sec
9. Dunman Sec
Other than (1) & (2), the rest are all co-ed schs.
I’m not sure whether parents of P5 or even P6 parents would be forthcoming with their sharing ( I can totally understand why & plse don’t flame me if I’m wrong). I no longer have any self-interest issue as we are alrdy done with the placement ex. I also have no inclination to promote son’s sch; just wanted to share a sch which meets Peony’s stated criteria in her previous post.
My 2 cts is to go to as many of the schools you have in mind as possible during P5 so that you have a better idea … as each of us has our own set of criteria.
Cheers! -
cwc,
I also q. like RVS, but didn't consider it as we are basically almost 2 ends of Spore. But I read b4 there're pple staying in Pasir Ris (even further than my place) who's willing to travel that far for a gd sch.
How abt Bukit Panjang High? I think they're strong in their Sciences ( think they've beaten RI b4 in the Science competition on TV). Or ACS(I) - for their IB IP prog? (ACS(I) has \"O\" levels track too).
Brenda10,
Ya, yr 2 cts is also my 2 cts. Last yr pple also said that the COP might increase, & it did - by 1 pt. Not sure with the actual IP fm Yr 1 for 2012, how favourably it will affect the sch's COP.
For those interested, VS (like the latest batch of IP schs) will be offering dual-track prog - IP & 'O' levels. Nos for each category prob will be announced by the P during the Open Hse.
Also, for info : last yr's intake is abt 360, COP 246, median 250, mean 251.
:celebrate: -
Thank you very much, QuiteKSMum!
2 of the schools that my sis is recommending are on your list - nos. 8 & 9.
If I want her to stick to an all-girls school, it’ll be TKGS or Cedar. But Cedar is perhaps one of the "BEST" schools? So may not meet my criteria. -

i'm at west side. not really recommending, but in time, if aggregate permits, our choices should be something like RVH, BPGHS, SCSS depending on what is the aggregate. SCSS and BPGHS cop differs by 10+points, but SCSS is just 5min walk from my house. dh said just go for SCSS. will get ds1 to decide next time la. i also already 'prepared' a list of schools with aggregate <230. schools around my place, can see how the students behave everytime i take bus around that area.

You’re welcome, Peony. Agree that Cedar has been getting more & more popular … cos it’s really a gd sch, I guess.
