Hi Peace CharliePeace Charlie:
Where to go for the assessment test? I tried calling KKH they said they do not see kids above 7yrs so does HPB... They referred me to Child Guidance Clinic but need to get referral letter from school or polyclinic. Any other alternatives? :?
Hi Peace Charlie, are you specifically looking for assessment for dyslexia or is there other concerns?
For dyslexia, I would suggest that you work through DAS, which is a non-profit organisation receiving subsidy from Ministry of Education. DAS has a team of educational psychologist who will do the assessment. If you child is diagnosed as dyslexic, arrangements will be made for your child to attend lessons conducted by their educational therapists at one of their centres.
Check out http://www.das.org.sg/assessments.html for details.
The cost for Full Assessment for Singaporeans is $588.50 (weekdays) and $695.50 (weekends).
Go to http://www.das.org.sg/referral-form-download.html to download a referral form (referral can only be done by the child's family member or guardian).
I called DAS and checked if my DD was referred by KKH, would there be \"discount\" for the Assessment. She mentioned no further subsidy as they are not a government organisation. So if you choose to go DAS for the assessment, don't bother to get a referral from KKH or polyclinic. The DAS Assessment waiting time would be about 4-6 weeks. Do call them to ask more questions if you like as I found the coordinator for the assessment center very helpful.

I also suspect my 5.5yo DD has dyslexia, waiting for her to hit 6yo so that I can send her for the full assessment. Only full assessments are recognised by MOE so that I can get special help/exemption for her if required in primary school.
MyBaby: Thanks for sharing so much, especially managing the emotional aspects of dyslexia with your child. -
There is an article in today’s Mind Your Body (Pg 10 and 11) about dyslexia. It mentioned that the earlier the intervention, the better the child can be helped in acquiring literacy skills.
I strongly believe in early intervention as I can see my DS benefitting from it. -

You are welcome, limchen. Abit like \"passing-it-on\" as I, too have benfitted from the generous sharing of other parents. -
Is there such a thing as Dyslexia for Chinese but no dyslexia for English?

Anyone knows about Dyslexia in Chinese Language?
Seems like dyslexia in chinese language is not a very researched field. I can't seem to find much info about it. Is it possible for a child to be dyslexia solely in the chinese language? My child seems ok for all the other subjects, but for MT, simply cannot comprehen even though he has been having tuition lessons since P1. He is now in P5. He understands mandarin and can hold a decent conversation, but simply cannot read a full passage on his own. If you split two chinese 词语 and join it with another, he either cannot recognise the word or read the word wrongly. He can get the word right at 听写 but will not be able to read it the very next day. :scratchhead: Now I'm comptemplating sending him for test at DAS but am not too sure is this the right direction. -
Its possible.

hi I would like to share my experience with my niece J. Sorry for the long post.
P1 - she is a quiet girl and from a mandarin speaking family thus when she could not read I was not surprised. However it was even really difficult to get her to do a ABCs. I thought she might be lazy or she did not like English. She does not pick up story books to read but loves to be read to and would listen happily when I read them to her.
P3 - realised something is really wrong cos she is failing in school and still could not get her to understand her english. I was reading up ADHD and got to know about Dyslexia. I have a hunch she could be Dyslexic. DAS assessment was really expensive but after much consideration decided to go to DAS and J was confirmed to have a mild case Dyslexia
P4 - After waiting for a few months she got a place at DAS - AMK learning center and started her lessons. Have also informed her school and form teacher. Very lucky to have supportive form teacher and she even nominated J for the best progress award for that year. This boosted J confidence as this was the 1st time she rec any award in school. Start to see slight improvement in her results.
P5 to P6 - She has tuition for English, Chinese and Math. We did not pay for branded and expensive tuition. Instead we chose 1-to-1 tutor for her English and Math while she had group tuition for chinese. We informed all the tutors that she is Dyslexic and so patience is much needed. We were lucky that most of the tutors worked out well and also J worked really hard on her own. She is really slow in her work and thus she had to give up on other social stuff like playing and hanging out with friends and also TV time. She slept really late to complete her work. She was also busy with CCA in school which she really enjoyed.
P6 - met some obstacles as she started hanging out with a few girls who were more interested in meeting older boys. Spoke with her and also told the form teacher so that she could keep an eye on J. She still hanged out with them but also realised she needed to study. It was a great achievement that she managed to pass her PSLE (score 199) and squeezed into Express stream. We were jumping for joy as we were expecting the worst. And before the results were out I had to keep telling her is ok to be in NT class and take a longer route from ITE to Poly.
Today at 17 she passed her O levels last year and is now studying at Ngee Ann Poly (14 points). She is just an average student so I believe she had to put in much more effort than an ordinary student to achieve her goals. From failing her Math in Primary school she managed to score A in O level. She did not give up on herself and neither did we. So now she is working on her goal to graduate and hoping to get into University. -
yes i think she did really hard. she is forever doing her homework cos she is so slow so she slept late like 11pm or midnight. she also has to cope with tuition and also supplementary lessons in school and her CCA is SYF item.
