Preparing kids for P5 in 2011
-
Finally exams over and holidays coming. I have been vegetating and engine is stalled like Pixiedust. This friday will go for Parent teacher meeting and get report book. Son did ok for his exams although he dropped in all subjects (except chinese) vs last year. This forum has already prepared me for this drop in P5 so I have lowered my standards. As always languages are his weaker areas. Really need to push him to do more reading this holidays and :xedfingers: that it will help him in his languages soon. At least he improved on his Chinese (albeit slowly).
Thought we will be able to take a breather after exams but teachers still handing out homework. He did his homework until 11pm last night. Really pity him. Can't wait for the school holidays to start. But, but know that there are some assignments handed out already.... haiz. -

I believe my son will be given holiday hw too. Report book returned today...much much more needs to be done :imdrowning: Need to read more as languages very weak...esp Straits Times and Readers Digest. Parent-Teacher meeting was after CA1. Need to revise his schedule to see how I can improve in his Eng.As always languages are his weaker areas. Just wanted to share my approach. My DS has been goofing off since 1st May. And he didn’t touch his books right through the exam period. As a result, coming out of the exam period, he is rested and ready to go.
Since he did reasonably well for SA1, he is all enthousiasm. We will keep up a punishing work schedule right through June hols, and one week into school term. Then, we will go on half load, and 2 weeks before CA2, we will goof off again until AFTER CA2 is over.
This way, when the exam scripts come back, he is full of energy to learn from his mistakes… and therefore most receptive to lessons from the exam scripts. Also, he is able to stay calm and relaxed right through the exam period because he gets to play the whole afternoon after school. Part of motivation is about energy management. Part of energy management is being disciplined about rest and relaxation.
My 2 cents. -

Glad to hear your ds is on the right track. :celebrate:
I like your energy management concept. Not matter how busy is the next few months I think is good for dd to swim at least once a week since all the CCA and PE lesson in school are likely to cease and replace with lesson. -

You are right. Apart from reading storybooks, I will need him to read more newspapers and non-fiction books. Wrt to reading Newspapers, may have to guide more closely rather than just get him to read by himself as mentioned by someone earlier.

As Chenonceau mentioned, we also need to let our children have sufficient rest and some fun during this holiday. Poor kids have been busy for the last few months so their bodies also need a good dosage of rest and fun to charge up for a hectic term 3 and 4. Haiz, it's tough to balance so many requirements. Hopefully, we can all have a fruitful and restful break.
Jia you jia you! -

Thank you for sharing your approach, Chenonceau! In the past few years, we usually just do school assigned work and spend balance of holidays resting, reading and playing. Somehow, this year, the schedule seems so much tighter with more to do to keep up and catch up.Just wanted to share my approach. My DS has been goofing off since 1st May. Anyway, with your energy management strategy, I shall remind myself that my kid may be better off forgoing some of the work I was planning and having some fun in June so he can be fully energised for the 2nd semester.
:thankyou: -

Hehe, I will also get my ds to do more exercise this holiday. Boys must exercise more to grow tall. He seems to be slower in his growth this first half.

I find swimming is one of the best exercise that can pump in a large amount of oxygen to the body and help them to learn and abosrb better.

It's really tough to be a child now. Met my P1 daughter's teacher during Parent-Teacher meeting yesterday. She told me my gal is weak...needs to work hard for the rest of the year. Also needs to brush up her reading and improve on Math. I know this June won't be fun but we definitely need to recharge our batteries BADLY.
