2011 P1 Registration Exercise for 2012 In-Take

I wonder how does MOE allocate a school to our child if we don’t get into the school of our choice.
-
I believe that what makes a school what it is - it’s all about the students. It is the students under the guidance of a superb team of teachers and principal who makes a school what it is today!
Isn’t the history and accomplishment of the school the reason why a school is HOT?
Hence the contributions of ex-students… -
Ya, ex students are what made the sch so popular now. So surely should give priority. Eg last time st Hilda is not popular sch until they started producing top psle students. So surely, u gotta give them credit for it. Else it will still be an unpopular sch. And then there won’t be balloting prob coz no one wanna go in.

MOE will ask you to nominate 3-5 schools still with vacancies after P2CS if your child doesn't get any place in any school by then. They will then assign a school to your child in your list based on distance, I think. -
Celyw:
Why not remove the name of the school. All student wear same type of uniform. Just differentiate by the address of the school. Student just apply to the school nearest otherwise next nearest? No school is better than the other. The objective of the school is to let all children have the oppotunity to complete the primary school education. Regardless of rich and poor, race, religion etc. Teachers will be rotate from school to school. No one will need to stay in the particular school for life. There will be no transport issue. No jam in the morning and evening. :rotflmao:Don't think you are realistic. Those \"NORMAL\" schools that are near the rich will be sooner or later be better because they have the $$ or donation to get better resource/facilities.
As long as human beings has the sense of competitive spirit in them they will be a difference.... -

Hi,
Every child in Singapore is already given an opportunity to study in Singapore regardless of race and religion. We do have a Compulsory Education System.
As for rotating the teachers, I dun really think that it will work.
Nowadays, it is quite important for teachers to understand the culture of a school and find ways to work towards helping pupils achieve. Once they are familiar with the profile of the pupils there, thats when they teach the best.
Therefore, if they have to change school so frequently, it doesn't help at all.
However similar the school name, uniform, etc, these are just on the surface. As long as addresses are different, same prob will arise.
As long as we feel that every sch is the same, I dun see why there are so much unhappiness about the system.
JMHO! Hee....
Good luck to all of us registering! -
pinetart:
So remove pv, grassroots leaders, religion/clan/church members and priorities only Singaporeans - this will entice everyone.
Catholic and Christian schools also impart religious education to the children and that is why parents of the above faiths will always try to send their kids to these schools. This is why priority must continue for religious affiliation. -

People will just then buy property within 2km of the branded schools. And as many of the branded schools are in Bukit Timah, only the wealthier will be able to afford them and all the kids in that school will be from a segment of the population only. Where's the mix of population then? The absolute fairest way is to allocate schools according to where you stay, so you don't get to choose where your child goes, just that you are assured he/she will go into a school no more than 2km from your home.
This will break up all clan/church associations (shouldn't all schools be secular???), and all those parents wanting to send their children to so called \"popular\" schools. Or parents from elite schools wanting to send their offspring back to so called elite schools creating this 'better than thou' mentality. There will be an even and fairer mix of students from all walks of life and all backgrounds in EVERY school.
Then all primary schools will be equal. Students who excel will then get posted to the better secondary schools etc.
There should also be no affiliation between primary and secondary schools. All students should have level playing field.
JMHO. Think it's ridiculous children have to go to schools far away just cos it's one of the 'top' or more prestigious schools and so on... -
Funz:
I agree. Right now in some of the popular schools in Bukit Timah, the alumni does help to balance out the wealth factor in the population. If only those living within 2km get priority, the population will become VERY skewed towards the wealthy, and the schools will become even more elite. Some of these schools probably aren't within 2km of any HDB estates.
Actually, like it or not, there will always be the RGPS and NYPS and these so called better schools. As it is now these schools are very popular, by going solely on distance, people will scramble to buy properties near those schools, and the end result will be those with monetary means gains the upper hand. When that happens, these schools will be deemed 'rich man's school' and become even more 'elite'.mummyo:
You're not getting my point. There won't be no NYPS or RGPS, so called \"better\" schools. There will be an even mix of students in EVERY school, not just elite parents sending their \"elite\" offspring to these schools. There will be no such thing as popular or not popular schools as you will have NO CHOICE where you go.
In estates with both private and HDB housing, the percentage of the student intake will mirror that of the housing type around the schools.
Of course there will be spots whereby there are no schools within 2km of your residence then your child will be posted to a school maybe 3 or 4km away.
Of course not everyone will be happy in any system but my opinion is that this will be the fairest system yet and take away all these stress of registering your child here or there, waste time PV can't get in etc.
As it is, some of these schools appear to have students from more affluent backgrounds. But with the old boys/girls and PV entitlement, it kinda balances it out a little.
No system is perfect. With DD, the current system worked in my favour as I was a student of a popular school. But now with DS, I am on the other end of the pole and to make matters worse, there's only a girls school within 2km radius from where we stay.
Stress in the registering, it is all up to individuals, if you do not mind any schools, so long as it is within 2-3km, then no stress. But if you want to go for a particularly popular school, then work the system and accept whatever the results. -
In case some of you do not know, there are parents who did PV for 2 schools. If they can’t get into Rulang, they still have the other. If can’t get into either one in phase 2B, they still have phase 2C to try if within 1km. How many of us here have such priorities?
Also, quite a no. of vacancies in the earlier phases are taken up by PRs. If want to change, MOE shld give priorities to Singaporeans. PRs will have to register in a separate phase, maybe phase 2D before foreigners unless they have been here for a certain no. of years. I know this will offend quite a no. of people but shouldn’t Singaporeans be given priorities in their own country? I believe in this case, there will be good mix of the rich and the poor.
