Hi Parents,
I visited my son at the camp site last night.
The so-called qualified instructors were chanting and singing stupid stuff the whole night :siao: and their broken English made my hair stand on ends.. BTW, the theme for the night was 'Hari Raya' :scratchhead:
Since we were invited to visit our children, I expected some contact time with them...but it was not to be  we were there to sit/stand on benches to see a pathetic camp fire and transported to a scene in the Night Safari, or perhaps watching Alex the lion or Gloria the hippo doing a 'I like to move it move it', remember Madagascar ???
The organizer did not allow the children to talk to the parents. What is this ? Even prisoners are allowed to see their loved ones, right ???
Sorry for all the ranting...I'm so upset and couldn't sleep the whole night. -
Sorry forgot to add this.
My son sneaked out to talk to us…he was homesick like many others who were crying but managed to hold back his tears. I had to distance myself away from him so that I won’t cry. 真可怜.
I hope the school does something about this sad experience. -

The one thing I always tell ds is never to indulge in LAN game activities in those ctrs. Seems to me that those places are magnets for delinquents.
Not true lah.
There are players in reputable sec sch uniforms in the LAN centre at BTSC. But how good is their studies I dunno lah.
Recently I boarded a taxi and the taxi driver told me he has a sec 2 boy in RI. From the way the taxi driver describes his only child, can deduce that this child is a genius- able to read & write at 2 y.o, tops the class every year, PSLE score > 270. Now also plays computer games everyday, yet sch results also very good. -

I do have a concern when my DS spends most of his awaking time in school, like now. A child may inevitably use the undesirable word again despite several reminders from parents. This was what happened to DS cos he sat beside this boy. 真的是近朱者赤,近墨者黑。I couldn't ask the teachers to allocate him somewhere else.
Sorry I disagree. I feel that teachers are precious resources that are best used in the most value-added activities. Anyway by putting one teacher in the canteen, he not going to be able to 'vet' all the conversations that are happening at the same time.Scary:
Yes, I think should raise this up. Kids learn best and fast from their peers. My boy didn't speak with all the lah, mah, etc last time. When he was in K1, he sat beside a boy who used a lot of these. His speech changed overnight. Till now, it's still the same and I am following his path.
Possible to have a teacher station in the canteen during break time? Not only for this purpose, but also for any emergency.
I think it is inevitable that our kids learn from others, both the good and the bad. We have to face the reality that every sch has its bad eggs. Yes, even in PH, though from what I observed the standard generally is good.
Imho, the best way to deal with this is to teach our kids what is right and what is wrong, and not to try to totally shield them from darker influences. That's just not possible. Vulgarities can be uttered in the canteen, in the field, in the toilets, on buses etc. If a child is mature enough to know what's acceptable and what's not, he will be less likely to be affected by negative influences. I think that's what we should aim for.

One teacher may not be able to 'vet' all conversations, but at least can 见一个杀一个。 If can't get a teacher to do it, any school staff can do it too.
Every school will definitely have black eggs, but shouldn't the quantity be reduced as many as possible? This is also one reason why some of us send our kids to PH after thinking the kids there can be groomed to be more well-behaved vs some other neighbourhood schools. Nowadays both parents and teachers play a part in educating the children. Sometimes having a teacher teach the child or tell him off is more effective than thousand words from the parents, especially when he is older. -

Ha Ha ....
Write a \"love letter\" to the teacher in charge of student welfare. Off hand I cant recall the email of this teacher. Think last year I wrote to her regarding safety on sch buses. Within the same week, she called me back.Jennifer:
Btw, can check with you parents hor..if your kid came home and said something vulgar out of the blue and had no idea wat that phrase means cos he heard another older kid in sch used tat word a couple of times loudly in the cafeteria...what would u do?
My Gal Just Commented ....
Now Prefects R Tasked With Diff proj ....
Like Human Resources, etc ....
And My Gal is in the Team Incharge of Student Welfare ....
Want her to Put in a Word in their Prefects Meeting?
Funx3, your dd is a prefect too? No wonder she secured an RGS CO. She's multi-talented!

For me, my ds does come home with an extended vocab after p1… some of my frens feel that I should bring it up to the teacher etc… but I disagree. I believe that there are all sorts of behaviour everywhere they go, elite school or otherwise… Of cos we try to minimise by choosing a better environment, but this should not reduce the responsibility of parents to teach the child how to respond. We all know vulgarities, etc, but we don use them rite? there is no reason why our children can’t do the same. In fact, dh n I prefer that they know them now, so that we can still teach n guide them… when they only learn them when they r older, more rebellious or less close to us… we won’t be able to do anything about it.
FYI, there are teachers and the sch counsellor is stationed at the canteen and foyer during recess… I know bcos of my boy’s crying incident previously… I believe if the teachers hear bad language, they will try to nip it… but if it’s not within their hearing, not their fault either… they r there to assist the kids in need, or to maintain some order… alot of accidents, crying etc can happen during that half hour!! lol!! -

:hugs: Janet, is this your boy's first time away fr home alone? Perhaps a feedback letter to the teachers in charge will help. Sometimes teachers are good at teaching, but not so good at organizing stuff like camps etc... I hope things are better in the day activities.. look on the bright side, now he knows how lucky he is to having loving parents and welcoming home to come back to everydaySorry forgot to add this.

Janet, I believe any mother would miss her kid when he is away from home for a few days. I missed my dd too when she was away at Junior Sunday school camp when she was P1. I distracted myself by planning a surprise birthday for her, she came back seeing the decors and was touched. After that first time, subsequent camps were much easier to bear. She went for the GB 3D2N camp this June at the GB campsite. The girls did drills, and all sorts of tests. She slept almost like a pig. She mentioned a couple of girls needed to sleep together on one bed or couldn't sleep at all. No parents were allowed to visit. No snacks to be packed as well. Thus, my fussy girl had to eat whatever that was on her plate. However, I believe over time, they will get used to such camps.

So, see the P5 camp as a training for your boy (and yourself) to be resilient and toughen him up a bit for NS?
I felt the visitation for parents for the P5 camp should be taken away since they were not allowed to speak to the kids. Why do they want to torture the child and the parents in this way (I think more for the parents)? The kids will survive with their peers 同病相怜, and will help them to bond with one another and learn more about teamwork. However, if parents were allowed to visit in the past, then it would be hard to remove this privilege in future. -

Your 2nd para is exactly my thots. By stationing at the canteen, the teacher's resp is not to \"catch\" kids using vulgarities solely, it's also for emergencies. For me, my ds does come home with an extended vocab after p1.. some of my frens feel that I should bring it up to the teacher etc.. but I disagree.
