Thanks for the information. I have heard some people mentioning about this but was not sure.

The students must be really exceptional to complete the diploma in 4+ years. It is also great that the school allows this.

Yes. The NUS High School curriculum makes provisions for students at Year 5 and Year 6 to read NUS modules directly or to enrol in project/research modules for credits. if interviewers were to call up work supervisors, spot check on potential candidates, normally they would like to find out:-

how would you grade the candidate's overall:-

- Attitude
- Personality
- Ability to cope with pressure
- interpersonal skill(s)
- Growth potential ?

Yes, generally that would be the way to do it.

Once, I even had refused to give a testimonial to an intern once because of lack of commitment.

But some students do their internship with dad's friend or uncle's company... so very hard not to give them a glowing report. Connection still counts....

sometimes reality of life ... can't run away from who you know that counts, besides what you know that counts.


imagine you're one of the interviewers.
before interview the candidate(s), curious flip to the application form see who are the parents. Scaly, you're interviewing one of your colleague's child, or your big boss child ....

Ok. That means, the students will get their diploma only after completing 6 full years. Thanks for the info.

However, I also read the following in the link given above:

10. Will a student have a choice to exit NUS High School if he or she decides to do so?
If there are students who are not able to adapt to the school's teaching and learning structure, they can exit at the end of the 4th year.

I didn't understand this. The students can not quit the school till 4th year?

Maybe it's preferred that they leave at the end of Year 4 to enter JCs rather than in the middle of secondary school?

Yes, that makes sense. No point in leaving in the middle of secondary school.

if you leave at end of yr 4, can take the results accumulated over 4 yrs, join either JC or polytechnic. Then carry on from there …

There could be some rare cases when the students really cannot cope with the pace. If these students stay on until year 4, they may lose their confidence and may perform very badly for these 4 yrs. It may be better for them if they leave at yr 2 and join another sec sch for Sec 3.

But I believe these are very rare cases. If they are accepted by NUSH, they should be able to get their diploma after 6 yrs.

Not possible. You can leave but you won't get awarded your diploma. AFAIK even those who exited in Year 4 to pursue undergrad studies did not receive their diploma.

Special case is that some PRs have been applying for uni at the end of Year 5 (they can do this because of the modular system, this can't be done in JCs), and leave midway through Year 6 (after dropping PR) to attend university. One person who went to UK to study medicine under this condition was awarded the diploma in his absence.

You can leave anytime you want, just find a school willing to take you.
