I dunno how they do the cut-off for each grade in each subject. My take is that the analysis is the same since GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels exams statistics are analyzed by Singapore not by Cambridge.

Thanks MandyMummy. So my original interpretation was correct. That the grades are dependent on cohort performance. I guess until MOE says something we won’t really know.

I think the grades are based on fixed cut-off marks but T-score depends on the cohort’s performance. That is why two kids with the same grades can differ in Tscore.

              Brenda10:
We can notice that many questions were raised for help at PSLE Math, Science or EL forum but not CL.

For the year 2010, the PSLE exam results:
              A and A*
              English 44.3%
              Math 43.3%
              Science 43.2%
              Chinese 81.2%
I think we don't have active CL discussions here because there is no CL expert active here (unlike Math, Science,EL).

The high% of A for Chinese is related to smaller base for mother tongue compared to the number of students taking EL,MA,SC. The A% is high for Malay and Tamil too.

I thought we discussed the grading earlier in the petition page? Based on MOE, the grade awarded are fixed ie no quota etc.

If you score more than 91, than A* and so forth. Which is why you see so many A and A* for PSLE. But these are all pointless as what is really important is the t-score. The t-score is the moderation or normalisation. This is the real problem because even if you have 4A*, it is nothing if your t-score is the lowest among all the 4A*. So, pple are comparing if their A* is better than your A*. Basically I think t-score actually rank the whole cohort from 1 to 50,000. It is so damaging esp for kids so young.

I much prefer the O and A level where the moderation is done before they award you the grade. In that case, an A1 is an A1. No one compares and say I got a better A1 than you. ANd if you have 10A1 or 6A, no one compares and say my 10A1 or 6A is better. Or my first class honours is better than yours.

And what i don’t understand is that schools are already doing away with ranking the students and will only reveal the band their kids are in so that parents are not competitive and do no find out how they rank in school. But then for the BIG psle, they revert back to t-score! Just doesn’t make sense!

If the grades awarded are fixed, then it is interesting that >80% score A/A* in MT, compared to about 40% for the other three subjects.

May be A for MT can be as low as in 60++ range ? :?

Or maybe there are a lot more students who are proficient in MT compared to English/Math/Science. 🤷
