Thanks HappyMama. Yeah, I just feel sorry for ds, so young must wear specs already. Was at Orchard in the morning so popped over to the Eye Clinic at Mount E. Confirmed ds has minor myopia plus slight astigmatism.

Then to Optical 88. Just now ds sooo vain when choosing glasses, haha.

We went to the Eye Centre at Mt E instead. DD also has a slight astig in addition to myopia. Did you choose the MyoVision lenses for your DS?

I see. I went straight for Ortho K lens as I'm highly myopic.. haha so kiasu a bit, just to maintain her eye-sight as best as possible. But at the end of the day, there is only so much I can do as I can't be around her the whole day to remind her of her reading/writing posture and when not to read or when to take a break... :roll:

Do you know how much does a pair of MyoVision & the Ortho K lens cost? Can a P1 kid with degree of 100 wear them? I don’t mind paying more to protect ds’s eyes. Thanks.

Also, you could go to around page 36 (+- few pages there) of this thread and there was a bit of discussion about the lenses (I remembered it cos' I made a mental note of the page... ).

But please note that wearing these lenses are not without risks, so do assess carefully and weigh the pros and cons. To tell you honestly, my DD's eye doctor was not for it when I asked him a couple of years ago. Another friend of mine who is a eye doctor wasn't very encouraging too. Maybe that is the standard line taken by the profession or they have seen some complications, I'm not sure. Besides the time commitment from the parents (as need to clean the lenses for children who are still young), there is no guarantee that myopia will not increase after wearing these lenses. I think a lot depends on the individual child as well as his/her habbits...

I also heard from my friend that one particular place would recommend their customers to start with glasses first. If the myopia continues to increase quickly, they would then prescribe the Ortho-K lenses. Lastly, note that not everyone is suited to wear these lenses. The optometrist will need to check if the child is suitable. And once your myopia is above 400 or 500, understand that these lenses are not effective.

As for age, DD's optometrist apparently has some customers as young as pre-schoolers. My DD was petrified initially about wearing the lenses and said that she would rather wear glasses... but we managed to talk her around and so far, she has been quite amazed by the fact that she can see very well in the day without glasses on. We paid $1800 for the lenses which are supposed to last for a couple of years. My friend who got this years ago paid $1600, but there are others who had pay more. Apparently it depends on the child's eyeball...

As for MyoVision, I don't have the exact figure how much it cost, but my guess is it is probably a few hundreds more than the normal lens used for glasses.

I think the correlation between high IQ and wearing glasses is a misguided perception of people who are bookworms and therefore need glasses to see what they’re reading. It’s probably Singaporeans trying to console themselves that since they have bad eyesight, they’re probably smart.


I believe the link between myopia and the Singaporean child is the white fluorescent lights used in ALL MOE schools in Singapore which is causing this widespread damage. All that advice about not reading in the dark, not watching TV, not playing computer games is irrelevant. I grew up doing all that, overtime but we have yellow lights at home and I still have perfect eyesight. Therefore, it is probably the white light.

Actually it is not only the lighting. One of the biggest problem is our lifestyle. A child who has more outdoor activities would tend to be less myopic than one who likes to do indoor stuff. Looking FAR is an important activity but not many people are doing that. Partly also as a small country, we do not have that much vast land for people to gaze.....so we are the most myopic country in the world I believe.
