      Can someone kindly help me to explain this?

      Qn 1)
      4/9 of a container was filled with oil. When 125ml of oil was poured in, the container became 1/2 full. What was the capacity of the container?

      Qn 2)
      Zachary is 10 years older than Douglas. in 4 years time, he will be twice as old as Douglas. How old is Zachary now?

      How can I draw a model to explain Qn 2 to my boy?He is able to come up with the answer but is unable to explain how he got his answer.

      Sincere Thanks

        Hi

        1) 4/9 of container = 8/18 of container.
        1/2 of container = 9/18 of container
        So, 125ml = 1/18 of container, capacity of container = 18 x 125 ml ...

        2) For questions on age, it is important to note that the age difference will always remain the same.

        Age now:
        Douglas = [1u]
        Zachary = [1u][10]

        In 4 years' time:
        Douglas = [4][1u]
        Zachary = [4][1u][10]
        = [4][1u][4][1u]
        So 1u+4=10, 1u=6
        1u+10= 16, Zachary is 16 years old now

        cheers.

            Hi šŸ™‚

            I just wanted to contribute my 1.5 cents worth on this

            In 4 years time, he will still be 10 years older than Douglas, so twice as old, but still 10 years must mean that Douglas is 10 in 4 years time, thus Zachary being 20 in 4 years time. So he's 16 now

              Hi all,

              my DS is going to P4 next yr, previously i was in another KSP thread P3 Math, when i was there, i was already struggling to understand the concept so that i can explain in an easier format to him to make him understand.

              i was just looking at this thread ytd and my head again went :faint:
              i just spend the whole afternoon reading each of the thread here. some question i can understand but need some thinking, as for the rest, i really catch no balls... :gloomy:

              i am started to be afraid how DS is going to cope in P4
              can anyone advise if it is good for him to go for tuition or self study?
              his school hr is rather long and plus the long journey from school back home, he'd have lesser time to study. i am also worry if he will be too tired to go for tuition in the weekday evening..

              can anyone help?

                First, how is he doing for math in p3. Do you think he need external help?
                You can either engage home tutor, to save you the traveling time or attend tuition on weekends.
                Even with tuition, it is best that you also continue to monitor his progress and help him out as and when needed.

                  his math is average but not too good in problem sum.
                  i am just afraid if he is not aided in P4, his result will slack.

                  i used to have a pte tutor for him, but she went to deliver her 3rd baby and stop teaching for the time being.
                  good tutor is not easy to find.

                  i felt that time is very limited for both me and him
                  he has to stay back in school at least 2 times per week for CCA. he also have swimming lesson every thursday.
                  timing left for him to study and rest are little
                  i am a FTWM, by the time i reach home and settle dinner, its already 7plus
                  he sleeps at 9, i only left 1 hr with him to revise whatever homework or school work with him.

                  esp for math, it can take quite sometime to teach and make him understand. sometime i wonder how other kids are copping with this hectic schedules

                      2 hairclips=2 hairbands, so
                      4 hairclips+4 hairbands

                      assume the cost of 1 hairclip is 1u. 2 hairclips=2u, therefore 2 hairbands=2u (since 1 hairband is also 1u)
                      2hairclips+2hairbands=4u
                      4hairclips+4hairbands=8u($40)
                      (draw model)

                      since 1 hairband is 1u, simply divide $40 by 8 and u will get your ans. šŸ™‚
                      Hope that was clear enough.
