My dd got in DHS. The queue was so long. Instead of queuing, we went to register and explore the route to Mountbatten mrt station. When we returned, there was no queue, buying uniform and textbook was a breeze.

The talk by Principal was interesting and informative, peppered with interesting facts. Principal come across as a very driven person. That's good. How long has this Principal been around?

      Yup, the queue was intimidating.
I did like what you did, went to 112 Katong for a leisurely lunch and by 12+ pm, there was hardly anyone around.
They did not have book 1 of the math textbook, so I had to go to Popular bookstore to get it.

I think the principal is weird but an interesting guy.
I did not quite like the way he switched between english and chinese.
I know that he is trying to show that he emphasizes bilingualism.
However, I don't encourage my kids to speak like that.
If speaking english, then it is english all the way.
      Chinese, then chinese only.

I hope the vineyard will direct this piece of information about the switch attempted by P. I strongly discourage a conversation/talk peppered with English and Chinese. I advocate bilingualism but not his practice. Perhaps, I suggest he speaks purely in Chinese and get the head of English Dept to deliver in English. Or, Break the talk(same contents) into 2 groups in 2 venues, one presented in English and the other in Chinese. Hope he sees our feedback. just my 2cent worth of afterthought.

Feedback from some students and parents that the Principal of DHS is indeed a very driven educator.

I did not get that feeling when I attended yesterday's talk.
I hope the feedback was from those who have been studying there?

Allow me to share my 2 cents’ worth.

Actually, Principal speaking in English and Chinese is a common practice in SAP school. From where my dd comes from(SAP primary school), the Principal also delivers his speeches in both English and Chinese. So it is acceptable.

Are there many sec 1 SAP school students for 2012?

What is the proportion of SAP school vs neighborhood school?

Perhaps some parents can share some insight.

                Thanks so much.

Yes, that's what stated in the handout. On first day, it is confirmed that have to report at 7:30am, it was announced by the teacher. For the rest of the days, she did not mention but I guess they will be brief during the orientation.

My DD got in too. queue for textbooks is so long, will get from popular retail. Heard some parents said that DHS will provide a lot of notes and homework, so no time to study textbooks, in other words, dont waste money buy textbooks.

Can someone share whether this is true ?
Regarding abt textbks, let's me share with u all what i have observed fr my gal.
For Maths, u dont need the textbks.
DHS has its own compiled DHP workbooks.
In addition, the Maths teachers teach very well (at least for my gal's both Maths teachers),
u dont need the maths textbks, unless u wanna to use it for self reference.

same for science textbks. pupils are given lots of notes for science, esp Bio, downloadable.
if u want, u can used the science textbk as a backup.

as for Lit and history, amount of notes would depend on the teachers. πŸ˜‰
if u're lucky, u would get more notes than other classes.
but i suppose, my gal was not so lucky then....... πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‚

for geog and HCL, again lots of notes.....
geog for sec1 , gal said that teachers did refer to them, but not for sec2.

as for me, i did buy all the textbooks except for Maths textbk.
