John and Ramesh had an equal number of sweets at first. After John bought another 8 sweets and Ramesh lost 12 sweets, John had thrice as many sweets as Ramesh. Find the numbers of sweets each of them had at first.
Can anyone help?

Twice of Ramesh's sweets is 8+12 = 20 sweets. Each of them had 20/2 +12 = 22 sweets at first. -
Thanks for the reply but why 8+12?
