sorry to bother but I need to know how to draw the box model for Nancy.

Helen had twice as much money as Simon.
Nancy had $120 less than Helen.
The 3 persons had $380 altogether.
How much did Simon have?

I know how to draw the box model for both Helen and Simon but stump at Nancy's box. Can someone help me? Thanks in advance.

http://i39.tinypic.com/9iwu0y.jpg\">

How do you know to draw Nancy's $120 less for the box in the model is more than 1unit and not smaller than 1unit?
Actually, i do not know whether to draw it bigger or smaller than 1 unit when i started doing the model. cos $120 can be anywhere. i do the amendment after i get the ans. This is what i teaches my boy too.. to look at the model to make sure that the model is correct after the final ans. But boys..... i am sure he will not check. 😓

plum-cake:
what is 5 four equal to?

1)5x5x5x5
2)5+5+5+5
3)4+4+4+4+4
4)4x4x4x4
5 four should be 5 groups of 4, as taught in my boy's textbook.

Therefore, the ans should be Ans 3.

Hi plum-cake, this question looks familiar.

Is your child doing a school’s past exam paper? Think I came across
this question and I didn’t agree with the model answer (5+5+5+5).

Bro... isn't that supposed to be 4fives? :?

5 fours; should be 5 (times) of the number four.
Or like SAHM Chew said... 5 groups of four.

DD2 used to always get this mixed up.
Kinda a waste of 2-marks questions i say.

Actually, it is quite easy to remember. 5 fours = 5 groups of 4, For model, i will ask my kid to draw 5 plates, follow by 4 apples on each plate. = 4+4+4+4+4
If 5+5+5+5, means 4 plates with 5 apples on each plate. = 4 fives. Both will still have 20 apples altogether, but for this kind of questions, i think the main purpose is to know whether the kid understand the concept.

Yes I know. 😄

Some children may not grasp concepts easily for example in this case, not all children can relate to the term \"groups\" easily. We can always explain in other alternative ways as long as they can understand and in future able to independently relate/apply to other similarly set questions.
