Turning 40 - A pre mid-life crisis????
-
Eagle-Ladybird:
Hi Eagle-Ladybird,Yes, it's very common. Dunnoe about women, but buying cars (expensive or exotic ones) seem to be the outlet most times, for men. In car forums, a lot of men termed \"Γ―mpulse buying\"or \"itch to change car\"as MLC - Mid Life Crisis.
Other distractions would be to start a project or hobby, quite unrelated to previous - I guess is to \"take their minds\"off this \"not-exactly-sure-what-it is-but-it-bothers-you-kind-of-thing
Thanks for your input.
I always thought that mid-life crisis started when one was in his late forties, nearing fifties, hence the term pre mid-life.
Anyway, yeah, DH is into HiFi and cables and related stuff. He does turn to HiFi forums to buy and sell. Guess thats one of his outlets. Cars too, but not into extravagant purchases - mainly looking for Golf GTI (his ultimate dream car)

Whatever age you are, the governing principle is the same,
Happy, you go through a day, Sad, you also have to go through the same day. Choosing between Happy or Sad, the choice is obvious!!! -

Hey, that's a good one.buds:
Aaaaannnd.... what's your itch, bro?

I'll bet its an itch that can't be scratched.

Men got so many itch(es) wan hah..?
A friend shared with me about - 7-year itch.. -
insider:
Wah, you sure know how to scare. :!:
Let me scare the wifies further...mathsparks:
First, your hair will slowly turn gray, then you'll need to color it each time you go to the barber. After that, the spare tyre around your waist will grow. And if that's not insulting enough, you'll start to snore (if you havent yet). And after that, you lack energy to do anything and need to resort to Eu Yan Sang's lingzhi. Oh ya, dont forget somewhere along the way, you'll develop long-sightedness which that fab machine aka eye-relax can help. And some guys will start to bald as well.
Mid life crisis men may start to be like in their teenage years with an 'identity crisis' issue. Some may start to have self doubt coz of all these physical changes. Then, may get involve with other women, esp young and pretty ones to prove that they are still 'charming'... (this may start at around age 45).
What I learnt from Human Development. It's a phase that most will have to go through. Some manage smoothly and some in disasters and so wives need to be more understanding to support them along...
I like that term you mentioned - identity crisis. Its apt.
However, i know (some) men who have so many itches
even before they turn 40. What's the excuse then if not MLC?

As long no itch to change the \"woman\" aka (wifey)... ok liao.
Is mid life crisis like menopause?
Seems like the changes that men go through are quite obvious based on some of the input here.
How many women actually talk about the fact that they are going through menopause?? Seems to me that they tend to 'suffer' silently (might be wrong, my conclusion based on some older women I know who have gone thru it and never spoke abt it). I use the word 'suffer' cuz I know someone going thru it now and it seems like a gradual process that she has to ride thru. She has mood swings ie sometimes in a good mood, sometimes feeling low for no reason, feelings of insecurity apart from the hormonal changes etc... Physical changes a bit hard to pin down cuz as women generally tend to be conscious ie dye their hair for cosmetic reasons etc... But then again, perhaps not all women have it that bad. Hmm.. I must go and find out more about this.
This person has three daughters who are all busy with their careers. She once mentioned to me that she was feeling lonely as she felt her daughters were spending more time in their career and with frds than her. When I asked her whether she had spoken to them abt what she was going thru, she just brushed it aside. Strange that she can't even speak to her daughters about it. I don't think she even wanted me to know, just that I happened to speak to her over the phone and commented on her voice sounding down and thats when she 'pichak lobang'
It'll be interesting to know if women do go thru any kind of 'itch' during this time......

Hi mathsparks,
Hmmm ... k
1. Hair turn gray (already) - check
2. Spare tyre ard waist (a bit) - check
3. Snoring (started eons ago) - check
4. Lack energy
5. Long sightedness
6. Balding
No comments abt the last 3.

As for lao hua yan, i felt like i was almost getting it. Difficulty reading small print, dry eyes when looking at computer.
Then i stumbled on an article which says that drinking chyrsanthemum tea with wolfberry can be used to retard the progression. I have been drinking it for a year now (1L/day, i bring to work and drink), and so far not experiencing those symptoms already! -
I started excerise when I turned 40; I am super fit now and feel so good.
Grey hair cannot be avoided.
Other than that I am loving myself more after I turn 40. -
1. Hair turn gray β Not so bad for me but dye black once in a while. Partly motivated by wife telling me "do and dye lah!"
2. Spare tyre ard waist β Waist disappeared a while back. Spare tyre still smaller than carβs.
3. Snoring β Never had that problem. Wifey does.
4. Lack energy β OK after 1-2 years. Same with short-term memory loss.
5. Long sightedness β Yup. Now wearing progressive lenses.
6. Balding β OK here. Botakness is a hereditary thing so, for men, if your maternal grandfather wasnβt botak, youβre ok. And stay away from MSG-loaded food. -
DHβs turning 40 in a few days time.
1 Hair Turning Grey - no such problem. DH shaves his head since he started balding since 10yrs ago
2. Spare Tyre - shrinking lately cos he started exercising. He says to prove to me he has a 6 pack hidden somewhere under those excesses.
3. Snoring - No problem since he lost weight
4. Lack energy - not experiencing it
5. Long sightednes - yup since last year
6. Balding - refer to pt 2.
So far, turning 40 seems to have more positive outcome then negative for DH. He has quit smoking as well. -

Well, like all things there's a range, plus minus couple of years. Don't forget, things are happening eariler and earlier nowadays.
I always thought that mid-life crisis started when one was in his late forties, nearing fifties, hence the term pre mid-life. . . Cars too, but not into extravagant purchases - mainly looking for Golf GTI (his ultimate dream car)
Golfs are not exactly cheap . . . he might tell you GTI, but really looking at R32
Anyway, moral of the story is . . . . just let him do what he wants :!: . . . even if it's a Ferrari ! :!:
