2013 P1 Registration Exercise for 2014 In-Take
-
on that day - see how is the balloting situation is like, for MGS < 1km.
If is 50% -50% half half (for every 2 kids, only 1 get in) maybe still can try, is about your luck. Perhaps out of the 2 kids, your girl is the lucky one that gets in.
But if situation type is like for every 3 kids - then only 1 got balloted in, i won’t risk. Best is discuss with your husband give you moral support, help make decision together. Your situation is different from those 2C applicants totally without any school at all. If you’re like them nothing to lose, even if every 3 kids balloting for 1 vacancy, just go for it. But your case is giving up 2A St Margaret seat to try your unknown luck.
This year Registration competition was stiff - compared to past years’ history inspite of new ruling (SC first). We had witnessed a number of schools with good, established strong reputation require balloting for SC, within 1 km. Those residing within 1 to 2 km no chance. There are still parents unable to ballot in Phase 2C Supp, & worse no vacancies within their estate anymore need to travel out.
don’t wait until P3 then start to seek Transfer. You can apply for Transfer immediately after Phase 2C end. Fill up Transfer form, submit to MGS Principal. Also, zoom into what niche talent or any specific areas MGS looking out for. Ask around those parents currently with daughters studying there. -
For balloting in schools, I have heard that ballot is for pp that stay within 0.5km first follow by pp that stay within 1km. Is it true?
I am staying within 1km of the school that I am eyeing, but if the above is true, than I have to start thinking. -
False !
MOE not concerned whether you stay within 0.5, 0.6, 0.7 , 0.8, 0.9 km or 1 km - from the school you're eyeing. As long as you stay within 1km - you're classified \"below 1 km\" resident. -

Thanks phtthp! You seemed really knowledgeable in P1 registration trends & schools.
Maybe you're right, in order to save me the stress from not being able to get a place for my DD, I should just stick with my alma mater for now & put her on the wait list to be transferred out in P3, if she's willing to change school. I'm not too particular about academic excellence as long as the school imparts the right values and my DD is able to thrive in the area she is passionate about. So I guess I'll bear with the inconveniences for now and see how it goes in a few years time. The stress most parents go through in the 2C balloting exercise is enough to deter me from going through the same process. =P (maybe I'm just not that kiasu enough? Haha)
We decided to give up our phase 2A confirmed place at a popular co-ed Methodist school to try balloting at phase 2C at MGS last year. I remembered the stress, many sleepless nights and self blame when we were unsuccessful and eventually balloted for a place at a convent school at phase 2C(S). We were very blessed to receive a call from MGS offering DD a place a month before P1 school started. On hindsight, would we have gone though the whole process again? Yes because we didn't wish DD to enter P1 a year earlier and we believed that her chance of being accepted into schools via the waitlist would be high due to the Psychological Cognitive Assessment Test results. We have friends whose children were successfully transferred to MGS due to strong academic and sports performance in P2-3.
Before we received the call from MGS, we put up such a strong show of positive enthusiasm in front of DD and :rahrah: display leading up to the Orientation at the convent school as it is so important not to let our disappointment cloud the next 6 years for our DD. We were too successful in that respect, imagine our shock when DD said she didn't want to go MGS despite all her cousins being there when we excitedly shared the good news of the successful transfer :yikes:
I am mindful that we were extremely lucky but I will never forget the trauma before, during and after the entire P1 process. I wish you all the best in this journey.... -

Tripsplanner:
for 2014 P1 parents considering OEPS :-Johmom, thank you so much for your response. thanks for the heads-up on OEPS open house. I will keep that in mind.
I have browsed through the OEPS thread on this website and I think it may be the school best suited for us (although apparently some parents \"cried\" at the thought of having to settle for OEPS :-). My husband, being born-raised Canadian, expressed concerns about putting the kids through the local school system (I must have whined a lot about my school days in Singapore) and I like the fact that OEPS seems to be \"more holistic\" in its approach. Besides, it fits the bill of being close to where my sisters are (Telok Kurau).
Once again, thank you!

Holy Molly! There were 80+ vacancies at the end of Phase 2C. Did the school suddenly become very popular? :yikes:
