MOE not tweaking P1 registration

SINGAPORE

Though not every child can be admitted to their parent's preferred school, the Education Ministry (MOE) ensures there are enough places on a regional basis, so that no child will have to travel a long distance to his or her school.

Senior Minister of State for Education - Lawrence Wong, said this in response to suggestions from MPs that the Primary One (P1) registration framework be tweaked to ensure children get a school that is within the proximity of their home.

Member of Parliament for Mountbatten SMC and chairman of the GPC for Education, Mr Lim Biow Chuan, said:
\"Would the Ministry of Education consider making changes to the P1 registration scheme such that children under phase 2A, which is considering parent's ties, should not get priority to a primary school unless they live within a reasonable proximity to the school?\"

MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Mr Liang Eng Hwa, said: \"For non-gifted schools, would MOE consider higher allocation to those who live within one kilometre so they have a higher chance and a shorter distance to travel to schools for the kids?\"

Senior Minister of State for Education, Lawrence Wong, said:-
\"There are also concerns raised, that if you were to give even more priority, what would be the impact on property prices for example? Would that then force out more parents who may not be able to afford living within that area? Would that be a fairer way of allocating?

There are different considerations which we have to weigh.
It's complex, it's not going to be resolved just by tweaking formula alone.

The best long-term solution or the best approach in terms of looking at this issue, is not just in terms of tweaking the Primary One formula but really in investing resources so that every school is a good school .\"

I doubt so. They are doing practically nothing. What we get now is lip service only.. doesn't reflect any listening on their part..

Guess the traffic condition is not gonna get better.....

I also could feel that they are doing something. In fact they have always been doing something...maybe the speed just not good enough for us only.... :evil:

I am absolutely sure that real initiatives to improve teaching quality are in the pipeline. Amongst other things, I did speak with an HOD from DS' school... a national sharing database for Teachers is being discussed.

Let's just work together with our MOE since it has shown that it is no longer deluded... and it does care. Changes take time but in MOE, they have good brains and are very determined. They have only to decide that something needs to be done. I do truly believe, FOR THE MOMENT, that things begin to move.

When the day really comes where every school is indeed a good school, we wouldn’t be having debates like this.


I think some refinement to Phase 2A for e.g. to impose some form of quota (25% of remaining vacancies after Phase 1?) is not entirely unreasonable.

This is as good as saying... why speak up, they would have done the right thing anyway? Or they were doing the right thing anyway SLOWLY. I am more in close touch with MOE than I am prepared to reveal publicly, and I am POSITIVE that some of these changes would not have happened if we had not communicated our needs.

It's like expecting our loved ones to know what we need without having to say it. Doesn't happen. MOE is a loved one. We need to talk to it and work with it. Not sit back and assume that it will do everything right.

Just wondering..

If there is 2 school that are EQUALLY GOOD in All aspects.. (Just, for example).

Would the alumni send their kid to their alma mater 5km away, or the school next door?

If that person is not a teacher or teaching the class, that person cannot be part of the ratio. Don't talk numbers on papers, talk about real experience. And don't point out exceptions and speak about it like it is the norm.
