some teachers do not like us sitting in... they feel uneasy... but i can see them cos my door has a clear stripe of window panel... so i dun usually sit in..

But if they are good then ok what. why uneasy?

i dun see any tutor or teacher will like... they may just dun mind but not like it...

same thing when i teach my dc, i dun like anyone, even my dh, to be around.. i cant explain this clearly in words... just the feeling is uneasy...

maybe tutors here can share what they think...
I agree with verykiasumummy.

Some parents prefer open concept, i.e. I give tuition in the living room where my teachings can be heard. Of course the parent will have to ensure a quiet setting without any noise from tv, radio, etc.

Some parents don't mind me giving tuition in the privacy of a room. There is less distraction in such an enclosed setting.

Whichever setting, open or closed, parents generally do not sit in so as not to inhibit open interaction between the tutor and student.

How can parents then know whether the tutor is doing his best to educate and motivate their child?

A tutor's credentials are a given; if the tutor doesn't volunteer during the first lesson, then the parent does not need to feel shy to ask. I always believe in open communication and mutual trust between the tutor and parent. So if a tutor thinks too highly of himself and refuses to show his certificates for whatever reason, then perhaps this tutor is not worth entrusting your child in his hands.

Beyond the excellent qualifications, solid credentials, etc, a good tutor must demonstrate that he or she can teach well and clarify any doubt or question which the child might have. The parent can easily ask the child whether the tutor knows his stuffs AND is able to make complicated concepts easy for the child to understand.
A good tutor will track the child's performance closely and have ongoing two-way feedback with the parent on the child's progress. Given a reasonable period of lessons, say 3-6 months, you should be able to see an improving trend in the child's test and exam results.

Having seen different child behaviours towards study, my favourite type of students are those with positive learning attitude and strong eagerness to ask questions & clarify doubt. I always welcome my students to \"whatsapp\" or send me any questions so that they do not have to wait till the next lesson which could be one week later. I'm not surprised that these are the students who will easily achieve distinctions in their results.
I also welcome parents to call me about how their children are progressing as I believe that the best form of tuition is when the tutor, the parent and the student work closely hand-in-hand to ensure that we reach a common goal.

I look forward to many more great partnerships with parents and students; it's a win-win situation for everyone when the students achieve great improvement and we, as tutors, derive a sense of satisfaction and hopefully get more recommendations from these happy parents & students to help many more out there.

Hope you have found your ideal tutor who really teaches from the heart. Good luck! 😄

Actually you can see your child's work and ask them for feedback.

To them, no homework=good, got homework-teacher is bad.
I see for myself is better.
Maybe different children are different. My children will give honest feedback especially my daughter as she's already in secondary school and sometimes more kan cheong about her school work than me.

By the way, you mentioned that your tutor is an assessment book writer. Mind pm-ing me who?

I came across a tuition centre near to ikea tampines. The in charge tutor is a male with white streaks of hair. He looks creepy. My Daughter asked me to pull her out immediately after the 2nd lesson. He ask her if he can take photos of her anot as he works as a part time photographer. I don’t even care about my deposit and just took her out. He couldnt produce cert too when i asked for it

I am a current full time graduate tutor. I have taught tuition in study rooms made of transparent glass before. I think it's pretty cool because the child will not misbehave and I can be seen doing my teaching 🙂

Another instance, in another house, the dad was using his computer in the study room when I was teaching her daughter. In fact, I support the parent's move because the tutor is a stranger (first lesson). The dad was inside for 30 mins then after that he left me alone with his daughter 🙂 for tutors just be confident of your own teaching and conduct yourself well.

Not surprising, I don’t think tuition centre regulated by MOE, just need to apply business license with ACRA.

It seems he has been on the radar of other parents too.

I think Glacier74 didnt want to name it as some centre will sue you for defamation.

I think i also know which centre she referring to as my friend told me about it before. She paid for the lessons full, her daughter attended 2 lessons and then suddenly when trying to arrange for the 3rd lesson after exams, the teacher and the admin girl were both gone, not answering hp and not answering the door.

Its possible that they went on holiday for a while but not possible if it continues for a month to two. She simply couldn’t get them and shouldn’t they inform the parents if they go away for a long trip? Its ridiculous.

Heard from her they operate in a HDB EA unit and they teaches pri and sec, and that the sec sch tutor is a male who specialize in only E & A math.
